Question: If Ben Wallace retires, can you still trade his contract?

We can trade it before he retires. I would assume he would be willing to wait for us to trade him first, and then retire which would save that team a ton of money immediately.
In other words, just another asset for Ferry to utilize this summer.

Where would be as far as cap if Ben retired, Z didnt pick up his option, and neither did Varajao?

Ilgauskas will pick up his option - too much money to leave on the table.
I also suspect that Wallace would be talked into staying if the Cavs really want him to. Playing with Lebron is a special thing, even when limited by physical ailments.
Varejäo will opt out, but the Cavs will be able to resign him if they are willing to pay up.
Having salary dollars available might not be a bad thing this summer, as there could be a number of bargains out there in a depressed market. Ferry has done an admirable job improving a roster with limited salary flexibility the last few years.
Plus, Cleveland could be an attractive destination for a top line player who wants to show that he can be the guy to put Lebron and the Cavs over the top.

I'm not sure about the rules regarding retirement - if his contract of the books and so on. But if it is a clear cut salary relieve the Cavs are major player to get some contracts that are far from bad but teams look to get rid of in these bad financial times. While i write this, the name that pops up is David West. I think NO would consider this for cap relieve, maybe a pick and maybe another bad contract to get the numbers work.

Technically we could find ourselves under the cap this summer, but a lot of things would have to happen. The poster known as Joel on RCF posted this scenario:
1. We renounce Wally and Joe, which is probably a given regardless.
2. Andy opts out of his current contract - and we renounce him.
3. Ben retires, and accepts a $5M buyout. That could be high or low, but let's call it $5M for now.
4. The Cavs exercise their early-termination buyout on Sasha and Tarence's contracts. (We could do the same for Darnell, but his salary is so close to the minimum that this would be total overkill.)
5. And then, the kicker: Z opts out of his player option for next year, and agrees to sign a 1Y contract for the veteran's minimum.
Using Douglar's always valuable salary information, our salary cap number for next year would then be $45,630,117.
LeBron James - 15,779,912
Maurice Williams - 8,860,000
Ben Wallace - 5,000,000 (buyout number)
Delonte West - 4,235,000
Daniel Gibson - 4,088,500
J.J. Hickson - 1,412,580
Zydrunas Ilgauskus - 1,306,455 - but with a salary cap number of 825,497
Sasha Pavlovic - 1,000,000 (buyout number)
1st Round Pick (30th) - 946,680
Darnell Jackson - 736,420
6 minimum salary "cap holds" at 457,588 each = 2,745,528
Check my math, fellas, but I think that's right.
Depending on where the salary cap lands, that could put us about $12M under the salary cap. That could put us in a position to offer a contract of 5Y, $70.2M to a free agent this summer.
Thats a pretty good sized contract to throw at a free agent, however, Z has already come out and said he doesnt plan on opting out of his option so this all becomes a moot point really.

Besides, who would we even offer the money to? The most logical answer is Carlos Boozer but Cleveland fans don't want him. Who else would be available that would really make an impact?

Wallace isn't retiring. When you have a 14 million dollar payday on the table and all you have to do is show up, you don't retire.

Ben Wallace could retire and his entire salary would be off the salary cap amount if there is no buyout. Then to compensate Ben for this, the Cavs then sign Ben to a personal services contract for an agreed upon amount which doesn't count toward the salary cap amount. Another great way to go. Another option.
