Looks like we are getting Leon Powe

Post#1 » by Roger Murdock » Tue Aug 11, 2009 3:44 am

Seems like Powe will be a cav if he checks out with the doctors. 2 year min deal according to windhorst.I really like his game. When he gets healthy he will be huge for us.

PG: Mo/Gibson
SG: West/Parker
SF: LeBron/Moon
PF: Varejao/Powe
C: Shaq/Z

Thats a deep talented team. We could have one of the best benches in the league.

Not really the best bench in the league i mean if you think about scorers there is no serious scorer to come off the bench. Celtics with Rasheed, Lakers with Odom, and Spurs always had Manu which worked out well.

Powe is not going to be able to play for quite a bit of the season so he will not be in the rotation for a while.

Now here is the good news, the best player on earth and the best center in NBA history are on the same team.
Also, Parker could be a good a play maker with Powe.

good signing, low risk high reward signing. i wish leon all the luck and happy for him.

should he come back healthy and 100%, he's gonna help you guys out with whatever minutes he's given and be productive/efficient. very solid post game.

i really like what we have done the in the offseason with adding depth.

loosing wally/sasha/ben and turning into shaq/moon/parker/powe is very big upgrade that should help out with all the defensive matchup problems we had last year with the lakers in the regular season and orlando in the playoffs. its gonna interesting to see how these new players fit in. also cant forget about danny green.

Great signing. It's a very low risk move for us. We don't need Powe until the playoffs anyways. With this addition, does it mean that Smith won't be back?

I'd guess that he won't be back. They want to develop JJ, and Smith would obviously cut into his minutes. I like Joe and I appreciate what he did for the team while he was here, but it seems like it's time to cut ties.

edit: and regarding Leon, as others have said it's a nice low-risk high-reward signing so I definitely like it.

Good low risk move at the min with a team option for the second year.

I believe that the league subsidizes part of the min too which makes the cap hit a little less.

I hope the CAVs can lure Joe Smith back to Cleveland with their BAE. He would make a good bridge until Powe can play.

Hell Yea I agree. Let Smith work with JJ and tire out, and as soon as he is tired BOOM! Leon Powe. (hope you guys liked my Madden impression) Anyway I want him here too for like one year wth the BAE or Vet whatever we didnt use on Powe.

Good news. As a Celtics fan and a Cavs fan, it makes my day to keep Powe on a team that I root for. I'm such a big fan of his. I personally believe that a healthy Leon Powe is a better all around player than Varejao.

Good signing by the Cavs although there is serious doubt if he will be the player he used to be before the injury. Celtics fans love Leon and I hope he gets healthly and has great success with the Cavs. Teams can't find a better role player than Leon Powe. Best Wishes to Leon and the Cavs.

I like this move a lot and it could get better if Powe gets healthy in time for playoffs. The reward of the this siging could be very high. This also gives our young bigs time to prove themselves in meaningful minutes. If this all works out we could have 3-4 pf's that can be counted on. Ferry also did a great job securing the 2nd year team option.
Is Larry Hughes having fun yet?

Well I guess Im going to have to learn to like him. I hated him along with every other Celtic so bad that its tough to automatically learn to like someone. Oh well at least the Celtics still have most of the guys on my most hated list. That should help me get through the season. :)

This signing is probably more about next season. I suppose he might give us a boost for the playoffs, but next year is when I really expect this move to pay off.

Love the signing, again low risk-high reward. Very nice. Hes almost a safety net, comes back for the 2nd half of the season. This team will be so much more athletic than last years team.

Lets look ahead to next year, depending on how Andy and Leon play who do you think will start at the 4?

IMO I think theyre both good players and both can start, but who fits better in the system?

But now do we try and sign another 4 to play until Powes back or does JJ and Jackson compete for time? Id like to see Joe Smith back and push the youngsters, they could learn a lot.

Finally, another good value signing. I am mixed with this off-season. Parker and Powe are outstanding signings based on the amount of money the Cavs will pay. On the other hand, Varejao and Moon are incredibly overpaid based on their production. Thus far, the off-season is a bit above average with the Shaq trade, but the length of Varejao's contract will hurt the Cavs flexibility in the future.

I really like the Powe move in terms of adding a solid piece to the roster. This team lacked toughness last season and a guy that will do the dirty work. Powe will bring that once he is healthy. In the mean time, this gives JJ Hickson every opportunity to develop as Powe will be out and Andy will probably slide over to center when we are resting Shaq.

I would not bring back Joe Smith if I was Ferry. Instead, the Cavs should either sign a veteran PG such as a Bobby Jackson or wait to see who gets released after trades inevitably take place during the season. I think we may see a Tony Battie get cut lose and I think he would be a nice backup center who can knock down the outside shot. Bringing in a backup center would probably be preferred as it would allow us to trade Big Z's contract for hopefully someone entering their last two years of their contract (ie: Antawn Jamison).

Love the signing. Powe used to murder us when we played BOS, if he can rehab properly and be ready for the 2nd half of the season + playoffs it will be huge.

Even better we have the team option next season, so regardless of what happens we are in the driver seat with retaining him or letting him walk.

Maybe the plan is to give JJ Hickson minutes early in the season but hopefully have Powe ready to contribute by the playoffs. I still think it might be a good idea to re-sign Joe Smith as insurance but he would have to back down on that 3 year contract he supposedly wants.

Considering Hickson will see major minutes and Danny Green will get some burn, how will our playoff 8 man rotation look like? Who won't get the nod?
