Trade Idea - Z for Z?

Post#1 » by Mezotarkus » Mon Aug 24, 2009 12:58 am

I'm curious whether Cav fans would support a trade that sent Zydrunas to Memphis for Zach Randolph? The idea here is the personalities of Lebron and Shaq can keep Zach in check and provide a significant scoring/rebounding upgrade at the 4 spot.

Grizzlies would do it since Randolph is a ticking time bomb for them without a dominant locker room presence to keep him in check and they save cap space in 2010-11.

Cleveland would need to throw in another piece to make the salaries work - maybe Jamario Moon.

seriously, why do people keep wanting to send up Zach Randolph. He keeps being traded because nobody wants him.

I think it's safe to say that the general consensus for this trade idea would be....

I'd rather keep Z than take Boozer. I swear he's the most overrated player in the NBA.

I considered Boozer as a possibility but thought his history with Cleveland would not make him even less desirable than Randolph. Everyone knows Randolph is not disciplined and does not play defense. But I really think Randolph is the best option for the Cavaliers to get a significant upgrade in exchange for Iglauskas. What other options are there? Have Iglauskas play 10 minutes a game this season and leave next year with the Cavs getting nothing in return? Randolph is a 20/10 player which is better production than Boozer. Also, I really think Lebron and Shaq can keep Randolph under control. Randolph has never really played with strong veteran personalities in the locker room. Look at how Rasheed responded in Detroit with strong personalities to keep him in check?

I agree with you.
Havin Z-Bo in a good team, with other Superstars and strong personalities would be very different.

If anything, I can bet you that 99% of Cavs fans would rather have Big Z than Randolph.. It's been discussed several times and it has been emphasized enough that we sure as hell don't want him on the team. Randolph is a bad character guy, he demands a lot of shots, and he plays no defense whatsoever.. That is the complete opposite player of who Ferry would chase after.. Sure he can put up 20/10, but if anything his cons outweighs his pros. I'd much rather have Z come off the bench as a backup big... And keep Moon.

As a Laker fan I would hate it if Randolph went the cavs. He would make them much more dangerous. Look at what Lebron did to Mo Williams, he went from shoot-first pg and borderline cancer to a borderline all-star. Call it the "Lebron effect".

If the grizzlies offered that (they wouldn't, they have Thabeet at Gasol at the 5), you absolutely would need to roll the dice.

Randolph would be bad news for almost any team in the league except the Cavs.

Varejao
own production: 16.5
opp production: 17.8

Zach (with Clippers)
own production: 21.9
opp production: 17.4

Zach's "opp production" was lower than Varejao's.
Zach also had the best "net on court/off court +/-" on the Clippers.

Zach' defensive rating each season has been lower or equal to his team's defensive rating so his defense is not bad; he does not make his team's defense worse.

Low defensive ratings are good.

Regarding Randolph's defense...

While he's obviously no Dwight Howard or Dennis Rodman when it comes to defense he actually does try (at least he did for his time in NY). He's just not very good at it. Randolph may have the shortest vertical among any NBA player at any position which pretty much caboshes any chance of him challenging shots. Also because he's not a particularly good athlete he's not consistently able to keep quicker players in front of him or rotate to cover the perimeter which kinda limits him to what kind of defenses schemes he can be really effective in. But, again, it's not for not willing to try. And the bottom line is you'd be trading for him for his ability on the offensive end and off the boards (both of whom he's extremely good at...has an uncanny ability to know where the ball is relative to the basket like few other players). And if he was also a good defender then he'd not be shuffling around like he has nor would you be able to get him for just an expiring.

Randolph's never been the leader of any team he's been on (not the Blazers during both the good times...was their vets when Randolph first came into the league...and bad...was Darius Miles and Ruben Patterson putting the capital "J" in Jailblazers, not on the Knicks...who were splintered between Starbury and Quintin Richardson factions, not on the Clips). What he has been is on teams where the leaders were cancerous (Portland being the prime example during the Jailblazer days). Many have said that Randolph does a very good job (especially early in his career) of playing follow-the-leader. Whether he still does this is hard to say...his time in Clipper land was pretty much uneventful and he really didn't seem like a trouble maker even in NY.

He's still a shoot-first PG.

Better off getting Zach Morris. IMO I wouldnt trade Z b/c of the potential of Shaq getting hurt, not only that but it gives your team bench depth
