if he turns into a solid player this year what impact does that have on the cavs overall? to me it makes us very very deep upfront. shaq,Z,AV,hickson, powe, thats some nice front court depth. hickson is the real X factor for us i think this year. 1 year to get acclimated to the NBA game should help alot. people are saying hes looking great in training camp, and hes played very well in the cavs first 2 preseason game. yeah i know its preseason. however people get hyped when somebody has a big summer league game. atleast in preseason you can get some sorta idea what a player would do durring the season, because your not playing against rookies and NBDL players all game long. opinions??

Thanks for starting this thread canomad and a solid post to form it's basis. IMO, Hickson isn't just a summer phenomena...the CAVs drafted him due to his raw physical tools and he's just scratching the surface right now. It's a positive sign that Hickson takes instruction so well from Lebron and Shaq and the other team's veteran's
I have been pleasantly surprised with Hickson's development so far starting his second season. Hickson has shown more patience and a nice mid-range jumper. His foul shooting has been great too. Hickson still has a way to go on defense, but what 21 year old does not. I was real happy to read that Hickson spent a significant portion of the Summer working with Lebron and it shows now; also, I am pleased to read the Lebron is still challenging him to reach his potential given his impressive physical talents as evidenced in the news link below:
The Cavaliers started J.J. Hickson in place of Anderson Varejao, who was having lower back spasms. Hickson, whom James has mentored during the offseason, had 15 points and six rebounds and was the only Cleveland starter playing in the final minutes as the Cavaliers held off several Bobcats runs.
Hickson followed James around all summer, working out whenever they could find the time and hanging out with James' family.l
"I see the potential in him. If he just had a good work ethic, that could help him," James said. "He learned more about being a man also, growing up, being around me and my family and things like that -- I think it helped him."
Hickson played 29 minutes, more than any other Cavalier, and coach Mike Brown said he wanted to see what the second-year player from North Carolina State could do if he got a chance. "For him to be able to do some of the things he's done so far, it's good to see," Brown said.

Hickson continues strong preseason push as Cleveland Cavaliers outlast Charlotte Bobcats, 102-96"J.J. is working," said Cavs coach Mike Brown, who was disappointed with his team's transition defense and 13 turnovers. "He has made great strides from last year. His athleticism is something we haven't had a lot of, and for him to be able to do some of the things he has done so far has been good to see. He still needs to continue to try to work on being physical and not just relying on his athleticism all the time."
Several times during timeouts Shaquille O'Neal took Hickson aside to talk to him.
"J.J. did an excellent job," O'Neal said. "He knows what his role is. He's not really going to have a lot of plays called for him, but I think he can get a lot of easy buckets from the pick and roll, especially when myself or LeBron is not in the game. He has to take advantage of those opportunities. Tonight he played very well. If he can continue to play like that, he's going to be a force for this team."

Hickson learning his lessons from Cavs' big starsConsider that statement — which sounds a lot like something LeBron James would say — as proof that Hickson spent quite a bit of his offseason with the Cavs superstar.
“I had J.J. with me all summer, for the most part, before I went overseas,” said James, who worked with Hickson at Cleveland Clinic Courts, in Akron and even in San Diego. “Everywhere I went, I had him with me working out with me because I knew the potential that he had. And he’s definitely implementing everything he learned this summer from myself and from himself, and doing it on the court.”
“I think I’ve added a little bit of range to my jump shot, out to 15 to 17 feet,” he said. “Other than that, I’m working on running the floor hard ... just playing hard on the defensive end and doing whatever Coach Brown asks.”

Before the preseason began it was my opinion that JJ should start. Not because he deserved it, but because his style of play would suit much better with Shaq, and AV fits much better with Z.
But this guy has been ballin in the preseason. And he is not putting up numbers on scrap or garbage. The guy is scoring on block and making 15 footers.
I think Mike Brown should take a hard look at the kid. But now im pissed we gave AV that contract

It would be a little weird starting Hickson over AV, especially when we just resigned Andy for big bucks during the summer. However, as long as both players are contributing significantly and they are both happy with their roles, then it wouldn't matter either way. Not to mention, we still have Powe.. So that makes us even deeper.

I can see Hickson getting spot starts, but that's about it, at least in the first half of the season. Cleveland is a defensive team, and I see defense being more important than offense at the PF spot. If Hickson can improve his defense to a point where he is not a liability, then he may be able to make a case for himself.
Nonetheless, I am still impressed with Hickson thus far. If he continues to improve, which I think he will, then I think Cleveland has their starting PF for the future. I could see the following lineup next season, with the possibilty of upgrading the SG spot with our capspace next summer.
Williams/West
FA/Parker
James/Moon
Hickson/Powe/Jackson
Varejao/TBD

I'm still not sure why anyone cares who starts for the Cavs as is always the case with the Cavs the important part is who is in at the end of games and I see that as being Anderson. That being said, I'm thrilled that JJ has been looking good thus far. If he can hit that 15 ft jumper that goes a long way toward making the Cavs that much more competitive.
