Cavaliers Reportedly Interested in Stephen Jackson

Posted Oct 19, 2009 2:35PM By Brett Pollakoff (RSS feed)

Before he was named head coach of the Cavaliers in 2005, Mike Brown twice had the honor of coaching Stephen Jackson: once as an assistant with the Pacers, and before that, as an assistant with the Spurs.

Jackson's time in Indiana wasn't exactly that of a model citizen, but he was fine in San Antonio, and even got himself a ring as a contributor to the Spurs' championship in 2003.

Maybe Brown, based on this past experience, sees something in Jackson that at this point, most of the rest of us do not. That has to be the reason that Cleveland is interested in trading for Jackson, and freeing him from the unpleasant situation that he's created for himself in Golden State.

The rumors started over a week ago, with the name of Zydrunas Ilgauskus being floated as someone the Warriors would be interested in getting back in the deal.

There was no truth to that one, as the last thing Cleveland would be looking to do is get smaller. But according to The Plain Dealer, that doesn't mean that the Cavs are done trying to work something out.

You have not heard the last of the Stephen Jackson trade rumors involving the Cavs.

According to sources, the Cavs do have an interest in Jackson and have had some internal discussions about trading for him.

No deal is imminent, because the Warriors are in need of a big man, and again, the Cavs aren't going to give one up.

But if somehow Jackson does get traded, and Golden State gets a productive big man in return, it would be fairly ironic. Because the fact that the team supposedly promised Jackson that they'd get a quality big in the offseason -- and didn't -- is what started him down this insubordinate path in the first place.

The Warriors are seeking a big man in return, which is something the Cavaliers don't have a surplus they are willing to part with at this time.

Cleveland is expected to continue to monitor the situation.

The remaining seasons on Jackson's contract are reportedly not a huge concern for the franchise.

I will not be surprised to see a deal happen, possibly within the next month.

I Have long maintained that I think the Cavaliers would trade Gibson, West & Darnell Jackson
for Stephen Jackson & Acie Law.

I afraid Nellie might want to Keep Acie Law. He's high on Law for awhile. Currently, Law is ahead of CJ Watson in the rotation, however... Nellie wanted to keep Law as a point-forward... I think if anything, GSw might want to push JAckson + Speedy for whoever you guys are proposing or Jackson + George

George would be a possibility from GSW view-point. Dunno if the Cavaliers would give up two ball-handlers without getting one back though.

I know they dont want to lose Jack for nothing but it doesnt look like Big Z will fit in with GS anyway. So if this becomes a straight cap saving move I think something along these lines may work. I liked the idea of OKC giving up Collison because our 2010 dreams look shattered regardless but we may be able to do movements for 2011. But I have added a twist to the end that may work depending on who looks at it. So:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Cavs: S&T Wally, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Boobie Gibson, Darnell Jackson, Cash, future 2nd, Cavs 1st

for Stephen Jackson, Andrei Kirilenko, Nick Collison

Golden State: Stephen Jackson

for S&T Wally , Darnell Jackson,Cavs 1st

OKC : Nick Collison, Phoenix 1st

for Matt Harpring, Cavs future 2nd

Utah: Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring

for Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Boobie Gibson, Phoenix 1st, Cash

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Cavs:
Mo/ Delonte
Stephen Jackson/ Anthony Parker
Lebron James/ Moon
Andrei Kirilenko/ Nick Collison/ JJ Hickson/ Leon Powe
Shaq/ AV

GS:
Monte Ellis/Stephen Curry/CJ Watson
Kelenna Azuibuki/ Anthony Morrow/ Acie Law
Corey Maggette/ Devean George/ Wally
Anthony Randolf/Mikki Moore/ Darnell Jackson
Andris Biedrins/ Ronny Turiaf

OKC:
Russell Westbrook/ Kevin Ollie/Shaun Livingston
Thabo Sefolosha/ James Harden/ Kyle Weaver
Kevin Durant/ Matt Harpring
Jeff Green/ Serge Ibaka/ DJ White
Nenad Kristic/Etan Thomas/ BJ Mullins

Utah:
Deron Williams/Boobie Gibson
Kyle Korver/ CJ Miles
Ronnie Brewer/ Korver
Carlos Boozer/Paul Millsap
Mehmet Okur/ Zydrunas Ilgauskas/ Krylo Fesenko

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Cavs obviously do this to get Jack and AK but give up all hopes of anything in 2010 unless it is a trade but all their eggs are in one basket and gives the King his best opportunity to win this year. I think this makes Cavs the ultimate favorite but puts all their eggs in one basket.

GS gets instant cap relief, a late first to mess with and a big who would likely show his hard work in the post for a team that has no post prescence. I dont know if GS is getting better offers than this and I am certain Ferry is hesitant on giving a up a 1st.

OKC gets a better player who expires and from last year to the years before they have had extra picks and were willing to part with late ones to get out from extra years but they keep their lottery picks.

Utah gets extra cap for 2010 and has even more flexability if they want to rid themselves of Boozer but if he shows he is healthy can sign an extension and not worry. They free themselves of AKs contract and can become 2010 players while getting rid of Harpring who has been rumored since last year to be on the block. They get a backup PG which has been an achilles heal as well as a C who gives them insurance for Okur who has spent some time injured. I dont know if the Phoenix 1st is necessary but if not I thought Cavs could keep their 1st and send the phoenix 1st to GS and then get Devean George to Utah somehow to give Utah depth at the wings.

I know it is long and unlikely but is it at all feasable?

If you tweaked this so Collison went to GSW, the Warriors would bite. Wally won't be wanted. I guess IF there is a legal way to make Wally an unguaranteed easy to cut "fill" but there's CBA rules that limit such stuff.
