Garza likely to DL

Post#1 » by Sky Bucks » Tue Aug 5, 2014 5:48 pm

According to CBS, Matt Garza is likely headed to the 15 day DL with an oblique strain. :banghead:

The Brewers haven't made an official announcement yet but manager Ron Roenicke indicated on his weekly radio show Tuesday morning that it is likely right-hander Matt Garza will go on the disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Garza left his start after six innings Sunday in St. Louis with the oblique strain and was examined Monday by team physician William Raasch. Asked on his "Brewers 360" radio show on 620WTMJ about the status of Garza and whether he expected a DL move, this is what Roenicke said:

"I think that's what we're going to do. He was checked out yesterday...we'll make that decision today."

Garza suffered a similar oblique strain in spring training 2013 with the Cubs and missed the first seven weeks of the season. Roenicke expressed hope that Garza's absence would not be that long this time around.

"I don't really know," said Roenicke. "He didn't think he did as much as he did last year. Last year, he was out for a long time. Hopefully this year, it's just a slight one and he won't be out as long."

In Garza's absence, the Brewers likely will return Marco Estrada from bullpen duty to the rotation and call up Mike Fiers from Class AAA Nashville to serve in long relief. The other option would be just to plug Fiers into Garza's spot in the rotation. They both were pitching on the same day so that would be an easy fit.

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I thought this was The Year of the Thumb in the NL Central with Braun, Molina and Brandon Phillips. Now, with McCutchen, Garza, and, yes, Braun again, it might be The Year of the Oblique (although now they're saying McCutchen has a broken rib, not an oblique strain).

Either way, I'm hoping Garza misses only a couple of starts. And that Braun puts his thumb and oblique problems behind him and starts pulling the ball with power consistently.

It's pretty ridiculous. Yeah Fiers may suck but we know Estrada does, so why not go with someone who might not suck instead of going with someone you know will suck? This sucks.

Well then hope for a short start or something before then. Because then they'll be forced to use Estrada and have to call up Fiers for the start.

Clearly they are just covering for RRR pulling him too early from the game

The #5 starter will miss plenty of starts the rest of the way. He should only have 3 starts in August (9th, 14th, and 26th) and roughly 4 in September - depending on how much they're willing to tinker with the rotation, that is. We know that Estrada usually isn't terrible the first time through the lineup, and Fiers was no better last year than Estrada has been this year. The September call-ups will make this manageable. The biggest problem continues to be the lack of another good left-handed bat in the starting lineup.

Of course they will find a way to make this a bigger issue than it has to be by refusing to break the rotation to minimize Estrada's starts, and will continue to make things harder than they have to be by choosing relievers according to the inning rather than the match-up.

I would guess they still have until Saturday to call someone up. Might as well maximize your moves and bring up a bullpen guy until that time. Fiers could still get the call.
