Not a bad investment.

Whether it's 2015 or 1915, the incremental benefit of putting a bad player in his optimal situation doesn't always exceed the incremental detriment of putting a good player in a suboptimal situation.

Most of the time the better player is better against practically all pitchers and in all situations. On those rare occasions when he's not, I agree that a platoon makes sense. Platooning 6 or 7 spots to show how SABR-savvy you are seems extremely unlikely to be justifiable by any objective measure not involving voodoo math.

I could maybe see the justification of playing Scooter everyday if he was a plus defender to go along with how well he hits righthanded pitching. That isn't the case though, Scooter is mediocre defensively and that might be generous. Below average arm arm. Limited range.

So if the Brewers end up with a guy on the roster who can play defensively as good or better than Scooter at second, which would be likely given his defensive shortcomings, along with hitting lefties better than how poorly Scooter does, it makes no sense to not do so. It's maximizing your roster. Most of the other players will be in the lineup on a regular basis, as they should be since they don't struggle so badly vs a right or lefthanded pitcher as Scooter does.

This is why i so tire over the years of owners crying poor. Granted, Attanasio has been a good owner in regards to being willing to spend compared to some other small market owners, but he has seemed to enjoy being praised for this as if it was a big strain to do so.

People need to stop taking Forbes' numbers seriously. The Bucks were valued at $405 million last year and sold for $550 million. The Clippers were valued at $575 million and sold for $2 billion. It's complete guesswork and there's no chance teams open up their books and allow Forbes to look at how much revenue and profit they make.
