Prince Fielder to retire
Damn. Wonder if he'll stay on as an assistant or something to get the massive $ he is owed.
EDIT: Contract was probably insured.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
Bummer of a way for his career to end. I was always a big fan even after he left the brewers.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
$6 million/year paid by the Tigers as per trade agreement and the remaining $18 million is split 50/50 between insurance and the Rangers. This happens for the next 4 years after this.

Yea, had he retired he wouldn't collect on the $100 million owed.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
Right...I knew he wasn't crazy enough to outright retire. Was wondering how it was going to be done, but the motivation here is that he basically goes on disability so the Rangers can save $9 million/year.

It's a shame. I enjoyed watching him play. Not the way I want someone to go out.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
Sad that one of the most durable players in the league with the Brewers has to medically retire. Such a fun player to watch, especially when he had that huge swing and you just knew he crushed the ball.

I'm shocked to hear this....hate when a player goes out this way.

Loved him, but was quite happy we didn't give him a massive 5+ year extension.
Probably would have been happy to have him, but still...

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
Sad day for baseball when a good player, who is fun as hell to watch, has to retire early.
Exact same number of home runs as his father.
116. Cecil Fielder (13) 319 R HR Log
Prince Fielder (12, 32) 319 L HR Log

Definitely my favorite photo of his time as a Brewer. Sad to see him have to hang it up this soon.

Didn't see this coming. It sucks though, I liked Prince.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
Interesting how that era is slowly closing altogether. Hart, Sheets, Prince are done. Weeks is close. Hardy, Yovani are on the downside I'd say. Braun needs to be managed with care. Doesn't seem that long ago the were the hope & dreams that we are in now.

Re: Prince Fielder to retire
It's semi natural with peds being dramatically reduced in the game, but Prince's was a little expedited because of a medical problem of course. Wouldn't really say Yovani is on the downside though from one bad half year, or JJ when he's posting solid #'s for a ss this season. Yovani really wasn't part of that group anyway. He came up the same year as Braun, and is younger. So if you're going to count Yovani, you certainly have to count Braun, who definitely isn't on the downside.
That was a candid, thoughtful retirement presser by Prince. What made it extra poignant was he wasn't exactly known for giving thought-provoking interviews. Actually, that's the first one I've seen.
In his swan song, hopefully Luke and the boys can win one for him. Surely it'll be added motivation, which never hurts in baseball or sports in general. I think they have a great shot.
That trade was good timing because Prince can finish his career with 1 or 2 guys he had a history with in Milwaukee. I know he played extensively with Luke, but even Jeffress he might have known from his initial stint in the organization.
