I'm not sure how this is a "classic Stearns move" (whatever that means) to replace Jennings/Cedeno. Dude has never made it out of high A ball. He had a fastball that's in the low 90s and virtually no secondary pitches. He's a buy-low project.

Yeah, you’re right. A buy-low project comes to mind. I also call that Classic Stearns (no quotations needed) in that any and all means of acquiring baseball players is used.

WHy? If he pitches like last year sure. I could be missing something here. I don't see him as any better than anything we got.

Any word on who the Brewers will protect for the rule 5?

Well, the Brewers certainly know who they're pushing to protect. BUT, we can merely speculate and look at updated lists of who exactly is eligible. From the Brewerfan.net forum topic

(I believe this list is updated - http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=37101)

COLORADO SPRINGS:

RHP Tristan Archer
RHP Bubba Derby
INF Jake Hager
UT Nate Orf
LHP Quintin-Torres-Costa
RHP Dan Reynolds

BILOXI:

IF Blake Allemand
SS Luis Aviles, Jr.
1B Jake Gatewood
RHP Preston Gainey
RHP Nate Griep
RHP Conor Harber
LHP Brad Kuntz
C Carlos Leal (currently on suspended list)
C Max McDowell
RHP Jon Olczak
RHP Cody Ponce
RHP Tyler Spurlin
OF Troy Stokes, Jr.
RHP Trey Supak
OF Dillon Thomas'

CAROLINA:

RHP Rodrigo Benoit
RHP Phil Bickford
RHP Nattino Diplan
LHP Jake Drossner
RHP Alec Kenilvort
LHP Nathan Kirby
IF Tucker Neuhaus
RHP Jorge Ortega (would normally be a minor league free agent, but signed a deal through 2019 as he was rehabbing Tommy John)
LHP Drake Owenby
LHP Angel Perdomo
RHP Wuilder Rodriguez
OF Joantgel Segovia
LHP Christian Trent
RHP Josh Uhen
RHP Devin Williams

WISCONSIN:

OF Jay Feliciano
RHP Nelson Hernandez
RHP Carlos Herrera
RHP Christian Meister
RHP Michael Petersen
OF Nic Pierre

HELENA / MARYVALE:

RHP Jesus Brea
RHP Carlos Luna
IF Julio Mendez

I think you saw a potential trend (?) starting when they traded Jon Perrin to the Royals for a low-level flyer on a pitcher (Perrin was 25 at the time of the trade I believe). Then, you can speculate who the Brewers might drop or let enter FA to open up roster spots for Rule 5's. In that regard, they placed Nelson and Suter back on the mlb roster. With Tuesday's dealine approaching, it would seem we are contemplating adding QTC, Stokes, Supak, Olzcak, Derby, Gatewood, Kirby, Harber, and Ponce. And, fringe candidates I see Wuilder Rodrigeuz, Devin Williams, and Bickford.

We will definitely see soon.

Sounds like we filled the coaching staff...

To quote a great cinematic masterpiece.... who are these **** guys? :dontknow:

Seriously though... any idea if these are good hires, something we should be concerned with, or just whatever?

Interesting to leave Gatewood unprotected. Still pretty young and unless I'm wrong, probably the best pure power bat in their system. Any chance hes taken?

Syndergaard possibly available. We could swing a trade but should we, and does it make sense? Or would you rather go after Greinke or stand pat with what we have?

Gatewood has a career .297 OBP. That's not acceptable for a middle infielder in the minors, much less a 1st baseman.

Can't see anyone picking gatewood. They could lose one of their pitchers like Ponce if another team sees some potential. Much easier to stash a pitcher than corner IF.
