Has to be a massive underslot pick.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Power/speed developmental prospect whose wheels are a fit in center field.

Will withhold judgement until we see what happens at 34, 57, and 67.

A very fast athletic CF? Seems very Brewers-y to me
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"

Underslot is not inherently a bad thing in the MLB draft. The Brewers have been good about spending their draft pool money right up to the limit, they just disperse it creatively at times. Having said, utilizing the 17th overall pick this way does seem a little on the extreme side.

Yea, they worked the underslot system pretty masterfully in recent years. It's how you land Cooper Pratt in the 6th round.
So we'll see. This year's class is an eye of the beholder one after the first ten or so players came off the board. I have to believe they've got a bunch of guys they're gonna try and float to the 2nd and 3rd.

Re: 2024 Brewers Minors/Prospects thread
MLB draft we have like a pool of money based on pick slot, right? So guessing we’re trying to go cheap early on a prospect they like to get value later like Pratt last season? Kind of like getting BPA in first round for sure, but guess we’ll see how rest of draft goes. Its kind of a crapshoot so may be a good strategy.

Payne seems like much more of an interesting tools but big project type than anyone we've taken this high in awhile. Not even 18 years old yet.

Comparison I can think of is Monte Harrison back in 2014.

Re: 2024 Brewers Minors/Prospects thread
ESPN:
17. Milwaukee Brewers: Braylon Payne, CF, Elkins (Texas) HS
Who is Payne? Payne is one of the youngest players -- and one of the fastest runners -- in this year's draft as a 17-year-old prep outfielder out of Texas who won't turn 18 for another month.
Why the Brewers took him here: This is a surprising pick by the Brewers at this juncture of the first round as Payne's earliest potential landing spots seemed more likely in the late-20s than mid-teens. His speed is his calling card and his hit tool is developing quickly, but there's a good chance the reasoning for this pick will become clearer when the Brewers start spreading bonus money around in upcoming rounds.

Dodgers getting Lindsey is annoying.

Athletically I can see that for sure but it seems they profile pretty differently as hitters no? At least from my recollections of Harrison and what I'm reading about Payne.

Re: 2024 Brewers Minors/Prospects thread
I don't have anyone left I was particularly into. Some of the best college bats don't seem like Brewers picks or they're extremely redundant. So I guess at this point I'm hoping they double, triple up, whatever and keep taking very young lottery tickets.

Re: 2024 Brewers Minors/Prospects thread
I just have to imagine the Brewers are going to load up on HS'rs with the next handful of picks to get them out of their commitments.
