I'm sure the option is deferring some of the money like in the Junis deal. Seems a little steep but he's better than Haase or Nola.

Hmm. If he plays like he did during his stint in SD last year, that's a solid deal.

Adds a good amount of power, I'd assume he's the backup C & part time DH this year. Does this mean we're getting rid of Haase who we just signed to a MLB deal? Or are we carrying 3 catchers?

It does seem the Brewers have atleast reinvested some of the Burnes $ back into the team with the Junis & Sanchez signings.

From Burnes to Sanchez and Junis. Lol doesn't inspire a ton of hope but on top of what they have it's solid. Sanchez could be a good fit here or a guy that is cuttable come July

I'm wondering if the plan is to platoon Sanchez & Bauers at DH while Yelich stays in LF and one of Frelick or Mitchell goes back to AAA until an injury hits.

I'm impressed by the skillful "serving of two masters" offseason being pulled off here within our budgetary constraints. This is a team that will be competitive this year and has the luxury of that being a bonus while the real focus and prize is the next few years. None of the future core has been compromised to build a current contender, I love that.

And as an added bonus, we just added several guys with no long term salary obligation and no loss of asset that can be flipped for more future assets OR they can help us compete this year.

About the only negative I can find is they have so many mutual options going on that they could be paying $8 million or something next year to guys not here. I get that’s their way of deferring but it’s not chump change to a team with a budget.

They can and should do a straight platoon between Yelich and Sanchez at DH.

Yelich vs R: .294/.393/.489
Sanchez vs L: .267/.304/.680

Monster DH numbers immediately.

That's true but I doubt the Brewers will sit Yelich vs every lefty. We don't know the exact roster but it seems like they will need to start atleast one lefty against LHP although that could rotate through and they could use some starts against LHP to give Yelich days off.

I guess what I'm picturing is

Vs RHP
RF Frelick
C Contreras
LF Yelich
1b Hoskins
SS Adames
DH Bauers
CF Chourio
2B Turang
3B Ortiz

Vs LHP
LF Yelich
C Contreras
1b Hoskins
SS Adames
DH Sanchez
CF Chourio
RF Wiemer
2B Ortiz
3B Arroyo

I'm not sure what other righty we have that would play over Yelich in that scenario

Are we going to keep all three catchers on the active roster? Contreras, Haase , and Sanchez? I was hoping to see Quero this season, but now it looks like we won't.

Is there any possibility that we could be in for an unexpected huge deal that sends Contreras out of town? Sanchez/Haase handle the duties until Quero is ready.

Quero seems a little tough to trust for much this year in the majors.

I’m sure he could maybe hold his own but you could get some major growing pains at age 21.

Someone posted this on BF.

Just putting this here....

Frelick LF (projected 103 wRC+)

Contreras C (projected 120 wRC+)

Yelich/Sanchez DH (CY 139 wRC+ vs. RHP 2023, GS 162 wRC+ vs LHP 2023)

Hoskins 1B (projected 115 wRC+)

Adames SS (projected 103 wRC+)

Black/Monasterio 3B (TB projected 104 wRC+; AM 118 wRC+ vs. LHP 2023)

Chourio CF (projected 93 wRC+)

Mitchell/Wiemer RF (GM 117 wRC+ vs. RHP 2022-2023; JW 115 wRC+ vs. LHP 2023)]

Ortiz 2B (projected 100 wRC+)

I think Adames is moved and Turang/Ortiz are up the middle, but other than that this looks good.

My only adjustment would be to start Yelich over Frelick against LHP. Yelich was better than Frelick last year by a considerable amount against LHP(Frelick also struggled vs LHP last year in the minors).

I don't really trust Mitchell either as it seems he's been extremely lucky so far in his career(it's weird the poster switches between projected 2024 & 2023 stats). Mitchell's projections are pretty low so I wouldn't hate starting him in the minors until an injury occurs and letting Bauers get those ABs vs RHP

This would be my opening day projection as of today…

C: Contreras
1B: Hoskins
2B: Turang
SS: Adames
3B: Monasterio
LF: Yelich
CF: Chourio
RF: Frelick
DH: Sanchez
Bench: Bauers, Ortiz, Mitchell, Perkins
Starters: Peralta, Miley, Hall, Junis, Ashby
Long Relief/Sport Starters: Rea, Ross, Wilson
Backend: Williams, Uribe, Payamps, Pegeuro, Milner

I think Wiemer (or Mitchell) starts in AAA to get consistent at bats. I think Black, Gasser, Misiorowski all start at AAA too.

Clarke and/or Megill may make it if someone gets hurt or looks really bad. Someone like Ashby or Joe Ross would not surprise me if had health setbacks.

I just don’t see a large path for Haase, Dunn, or Owen Miller. Arroyo I could maybe see if has good camp and can give 3B a boost but don’t believe he is on 40 man.

I doubt it's the plan to trade Contreras but it might have been a hedge your bet type signing in case someone absolutely bowls you over with an offer.

Sanchez will platoon with Bauers at DH initially and probably catch once a week.

Bauers is terrible. If the Brewers and trying to win they would do well to have him rarely step in the box.

Again...I'm not making a stone cold guarantee or something here, but the Brewers are a smart organization. Sometimes you're just making depth moves, but I think maybe they see something in him. He was on a 20 HR pace last year with the Yankees assuming 140 games. His hard hit % and barrel % spiked and he continued to add more fly balls.

I think they may view him as a bench lefty that may have traded out his average/lower K% for some power.

I agree he's not a DH mainstay, but they may see him as at least a major league power hitter now.
