It wouldn't come as much of a surprise. The Brewers were linked to him prior to his retirement and DM loves reclamation projects.

Pretty sure we actually signed him and had him in spring training right before he retired. With them looking at veteran relievers and Gorzelanny having shoulder surgery I would be shocked if we weren't one of the teams.

Mets wanted Thornburg for Ike Davis - Glad Melvin didn't do that

With the Hart situation in flux, James Loney's agent has reached out to Doug Melvin this morning: http://bit.ly/1bw18NM (via @AdamMcCalvy)

I'd much rather have Hart than any of the proposed alternatives, assuming his knees aren't totally destroyed.

Sounds like it's Brewers or Mariners for Hart. Don't want James Loney and really don't want to give up anything of value for Ike Davis or Logan Morrison so I hope he picks us.

Hart is gone to Seattle on a one year deal according to Heyman. Goddammit.

Just a reminder about what a cold business sports is. All the talk about how he had unfinished business here, family, etc, etc. All a moot point when it comes to $$$$$$$$$$$.

I really wanted him back, but now that they don't, I'm OK with basically the cheapest of the 3 options: Davis, Morrison, and Loney. They're lefties, which is nice. I hope we use Aramis or a cheap RH bat to platoon at 1B sometimes.

I do not want to spend anything significant in money or prospects for any of those guys, but there is some (modest) intrigue to all of them.
Davis: Highest ceiling but was absolute trash last year
Morrison: Young, never has really put together a healthy, .800+ season. I think he was overrated but in a platoon situation could be a good swing OF/1B guy. Could with the short porch in right.
Loney: We know what we're getting with him. Might creep up near .800 at Miller Park.

Kind of a dick move considering we paid for a whole year of him doing nothing and he then proceeded to publicly say that he felt like he owned the Brewers and would take less money to stay here.

So much for that.

James Loney isn't exciting, but I'd rather have him than give up young arms for Davis or Morrison.

Cross off Morrison off the list.

Piss off, Seattle. Melvin really needs to avoid a bad move now.

Yes, please no knee jerk moves Doug. Loney for cheap (he isn't worth much) is preferable to a trade.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay are also in on Loney. I can't imagine his asking price is near reasonable at this point.

They're going to have to pay Loney more than he's worth with the way things have been going. Hart really f'd us here.

Morris/Halton platoon. Francisco 1B/3B bench bat. Solved.

I would pass on Loney. The only way I would take him is on the cheap.

The thought has crossed my mind many times but you're toying with the possibility of a .700 platoon there. Halton may be trash, even in a lefty-only platoon situation. Seems like a AAAA guy.

Morris has a bit more promise but his OBP probably won't rise too high, even against just righties.

Of course, if we're going for a full rebuild, then who cares at this point.

EDIT: Looking at baseball-reference in Morris' splits, they have "vs. younger pitchers" and "vs. older pitchers"

He FEASTED on older pitchers in AA and was trash against the younger ones. Maybe that is why the Brewers aren't that high on him. He may just be a guy that can crush junkballers and will not thrive against MLB pitching.
