The day I take something Dayn Perry writes seriously is the same day I take something Tim McCarver says seriously.

Yeah now I know why I don't take Perry seriously.

-Hall is just barely above Pie?
-Fukudome and Hart is a push? No Hart>Fukudome
-Soto will probably be better than Kendall but Cubs fans are expecting too much imo.
-Joe Dillon playing LF? Is he high? It would be Gross getting most of the playing time with Dillon playing vs lefties.

Also how is the rotation "potentially" a big edge to the Cubs? If anything it's potentially a big edge to the Brewers. If Sheets stays healthy (I know big if), Gallardo and Villanueva in the rotation from the start and a Cappy getting more lucky and that could be a huge edge for the Brewers.

Eric Gagne may wind up as an effective closer for the Brewers, but given his struggles in Boston last season he's something less than a known quantity going forward.

Kerry Wood figures to give them the dominating, shutdown closer they've lacked for so long.

Anybody find these two quotes hilarious?

Yes, Gagne struggled in Boston for 18 innings, however he was good in Texas. Both have injury concerns but Gagne is a huge question while Wood is a shutdown closer. Yeah, no bias there.

Hudson is teh pwn w/ RISP, RISP w/2outs

1. Never said anything about his D. Everyone knows Hudson is better at D.

2. Weeks .235/.374/.433 16 HR, 25 SB, 2 CS
Hudson .294/.376/.441 10 HR, 10 SB, 2 CS

Comparable FTW!

I don't really put much stock in RISP, it varies from year to year and it's a small sample from year to year as well. Also, it's pretty easy to pitch to a guy when you know he can't hold up his bat on offspeed pitches due to a wrist injury.

The Wood comment is definitely off base. His Gagne assessment is dead on. Gagne isn't a huge question? Take the blinders off.

.235 BA
.295 BA

The comparison should stop there. O-Hud was better than Weeks last year, it's stupid to debate that.

Next year is a different story. Weeks will be better and I'm pretty sure O-Hud has reached his peak, let's see if he can maintain it.

And try to remember that when it comes to Trwi, he will always throw as many numbers as he can at you when comparing players, which he loves to do. Last off-season he was trying to tell me that Geoff Jenkins is just as good as Soriano because his numbers were "comparable". It's just part of Trwi's charm.

Where did I say Gagne wasn't a huge question? I said saying Gagne is a huge question but then calling Wood a shutdown closer is biased.

Ahahahahahaha. Tell me why it should stop there? Because batting average is a good way to judge a hitter? Joe Morgan, is that you?

Gee now why would I do that? Hmm I can't imagine maybe because comparing their numbers is the only way to compare them?

Tell me why I was wrong.

Last offseason their career numbers were...

Soriano .280/.328/.510/.838
Jenkins .279/.352/.499/.851

Soriano is faster, Jenkins the better defender. Come on tell me why I'm wrong. Is it because Soriano is a "star player?"

No, It's because Jenkins best years were in 99-00, while Soriano's were in 06-07. Career numbers aren't exactly a perfect indicator when Jenkins was at his best 8 years ago. Soriano is in the middle of his prime. Soriano was 100 points better in OPS last season. And he also rated as a better defender last season by most metrics, one of the best in baseball actually. And he's faster, as you mentioned. Is that enough?

We're not talking about last year, we're talking about after the 2006 season. Jenkins also had very good years in 2003 and 2005, better than Soriano.

Look at what each did when Soriano finally started. Jenkins was better in 2001, 2003 and 2005 and Soriano was better in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

Except that until 2006, Soriano was a 2nd baseman. Which is a lot more demanding on your body, and his offense was a lot more valuable from the position. Which is why he was a better player in more years than you give him credit for.

Soriano WARP's

06: 6.4
05: 4.0
04: 4.7
03: 8.0
02: 8.7

Jenkins

06: 3.3
05: 6.9
04: 2.8
03: 4.8
02: 2.3

Plus, Soriano's hitting has obviously improved since moving to the OF. As I said, Jenkins hasn't really been better since 2001.
