Attanasio is full of ****.

I don't think Mark would EVER say otherwise. It's effectively a mandate to inflate your losses in anticipation of the next CBA in 2021.
My guess is the bulk of the actual payment for the spring training facility upgrade was paid in 2019 so technically he's probably not lying that if you look at purely cash in vs cash out in 2019 it's in the red. Now that's deceptive because that is a long term expense and they also got cash from the city of Phoenix on that deal. I'm sure on a multiple year rolling average they are very much in the black... and that's not even looking franchise increase in value.

I imagine their profits and losses on paper never line up with reality. I agree with twirly.

I've been in & out on offseason so how far off am I on my understanding of the roster?

SP:
B. Anderson
J. Lindblom
B. Woodruff
A. Houser
Peralta

Bullpen:
Hader
Knebel
Claudio
Burnes
Suter
Phelps
R. Black

C:
Narvaez
Pîna

1B: Smoak/Braun
2B: Hiura
SS: Arcia
3B: Gyorko/Sogard
Utility: Urias

LF: Yelich
CF: Cain
RF: Garcia/Braun
Bench: Gamel

I assume last bullpen spot up for grabs, I put in Black. If Urias opens on DL that may help a guy like Healy unless they prefer to keep another arm since Sogard could be super utility guy. Any chance a guy like Corey Ray steals Gamel's spot? Guessing they want Ray to have consistent at bats though.

Let me know how off I am.

And I'd say Utility right now is Brock Holt (with maybe some Sogard or Holt starts at SS) and unless Arcia is turning it on, Arcia is going to get sent down or on the chopping block when Urias returns.

Corey Ray likely does not steal Gamel's spot unless they have low expectations.

You'd rather Ray get 400+ ABs in the minors while Gamel gets 150-200 for the Brewers.

Holt official. Taylor Williams DFA'd, I had high hopes for Taylor at one point because he has good stuff just couldn't put it together.

I'm highly uneducated on the non-Brewer players, but I kind of dig a lot of the low key moves we made. Make no doubt, we are looking for quality through quantity, but a lot of these guys seem like a good fit, putting a bunch of lefties that may see their power numbers surge, good OBP...just an interesting group altogether.

I pretty much like every individual move they have made but still feels like we are missing something

Best I can tell you are missing Lauer for most likely a rotation spot. Arcia hopefully won't be starting. Holt will be the utility, and then I'm guessing Wahl makes the bullpen.

We are always missing a top "1-5 starting rotation".

There's a world where everything breaks right and this team continues to exceed expectations, but it feels like there's just way too many journeymen/unproven players for that to be a high likelihood.

Finding it tough to get excited about the Brewers roster this year. It's fun when there is a legit 90+ win team or a stud farm system to look forward to, right now the organization has neither. Kind of at a crossroads.

Our drafting / luck seems atrocious compared to homegrown talent in our division. Maybe everybody feels that way about their own team, but woof, it has not been good.

I suppose if Burnes and Peralta make the jump this year, that could change but I am not even sure if we drafted both of those guys.

Who was our last stud starting pitcher that was drafted? Yovanni Gallardo looked promising. We know how that worked out.

Ben Sheets? Lol.

Jimmy Nelson but tht doesnt count either.

Hader was a starter.

Woodruff

But yeah they have been awful at drafting and developing pitchers for like 40 years running now.

I'm expecting us to be average, but could easily see Stearns puzzle pieces fitting together and making something great. Would be happy with a competitive year with good performances out of the young guys.

I do feel less enthused about this year because it feels like there are even more puzzle pieces that have to fit to work and the Reds have added another competitor to the division, BUT

2 years ago the outlook was not much better and they were 1 game from the WS. Last year's team suffered a bunch of bad luck and still were close to the division title.

So I would not say the layman's expectations are to be trusted too much with this management team. But I can't really deny that this year seems like maybe a transition year.

I actually have a good feeling about the team and think they’re going to surprise. I see counsell playing with the lineup like he does the pitching

Not a ton of upside this year, but they'll scratch out more than their fair share of wins.

One thing I've noticed about the last few years is that we always go into a season saying "if we just get replacement-level production from these 5-7 roster spots, instead of what we got last year, we'll be much better." The problem is that new weak links keep emerging, like Chacin or Jeffress or Aguilar or Shaw last year. Case in point: Sogard was once one of those total liabilities, and we hoped that replacing him would add a few wins... but now we have him back and he's one of the guys we hope will replace a dud like Perez with acceptable production. Hmmm.

Basically, when you're always bargain-shopping, no matter how good you are at it, it's going to limit your upside. I think they've gotten good value again, but they will also end up playing some really bad players for extended periods, just like each of the last 3 years. And even though every contender has a few problems, the Brewers will probably have more. I look forward to seeing them win more than they should, as usual, but I don't think they stay in the race as long as they did the last 3 years. They haven't been adding enough homegrown talent to keep this model sustainable.
Wut we've got here is... faaailure... to communakate.
