Re: Brewers/Phillies Series
That was so awesome. I got confirmation tonight that I'm definitely going to cry like a baby (just like I did after game 6 at the Fiserv) if this team wins the world series. I was tearing up after that walk off hit and watching them celebrate, just such a special team.
Misery loves company

That was fun. 9 more years of Chourio.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yeah looking like an incredible deal. Maybe the best contract in baseball right now.

Hoskins was our only hitter to homer against Philly in both our series.

Last week I revisited Fangraphs' Trade Value series, 2024 edition. It came out in mid-July. They had him #25.
I labeled the player tiers I created when I was making this list, and most of them had descriptive names: “playoff-caliber starters with team control,” “top prospects who haven’t broken out yet,” “wait ‘til you see him play shortstop defense,” etc. This tier was just called “Tier Seven: Jackson Chourio.” I tried and failed to find players of roughly comparable value, so I ended up placing him on the list by process of elimination as much as anything else.
Chourio’s potential is off the charts. He’s 20 years old and on pace for a three-win season. He’s hitting major league pitching as well as or better than plenty of more advanced hitting prospects. He’s adding value on the basepaths. He’s getting better as the year goes along. I wouldn’t be shocked if he posted a 20/20 season. He’s a difference maker on defense, too. The Brewers are awash in good defensive center fielders and I understand why Chourio ended up in right, but he’s one of the best defensive corner outfielders in the majors already.
Chourio’s contract is also enticing; it’s in the Goldilocks zone where all the terms are just right. The AAV is low enough that even if he ends up as merely an average regular in the long run, his deal won’t significantly impact a team’s cherished financial flexibility. The two team options (2032 and 2033) are nice kickers if he’s a star, and those will be his age-28 and 29 seasons, so it’s not like they’re unlikely to be exercised because he’ll be in the midst of his decline phase. The extra years relative to the normal arbitration process feel extra valuable because he’s so young – how many players are 27 in the eighth year of their contract? If he’s a superstar, this deal will make Chourio the best bargain in baseball for years to come.
I don’t think he fits with the other 2024 prospect debuts because he’s signed for longer and is doing more in the majors already. But there’s still uncertainty here; it’s a long deal, and he isn’t great yet, just potentially so. Chourio vs. Bailey made me think for a looooooong time. In the end, I decided that Chourio’s combination of high defensive floor and breakout potential, combined with his contract, put him over the top.
How quickly things change. He's a star now, and he's probably the best bargain in baseball. The only other contenders are probably Merrill, De La Cruz, Henderson, and Witt.

It's hilarious how well set up we are right now. I still think they let Adames walk, etc. but there are really no long-term contractual burdens unless you think maybe Yelich is cooked/or he really fades at the end of his deal.
They can make one more big splash or a few short-term ones in the next few years before the next round of arby guys come due.
Even the Ashby deal looks fine now.

I agree, really besides Adames and a few mutual guys (Hoskins, Sanchez, Montas, Miley, etc) the whole team should be back. I don't think Hoskins will opt out. I assume Miley, Montas, and maybe even Sanchez won't have their option picked up by the Brewers...the first 2 for sure. I don't see anyway the Brewers will pay what Adames is going to get now. I know he is super popular both in the clubhouse and with fans, but his price tag is going to be insane. There is just too much risk and he can be up & down at the plate. Who knows what he'll do next season at the plate.
And if Yelich's surgery turns out well and you can maybe squeeze at least 2 more years of the production he was providing this and last season, that deal is NOT actually looking as bad as it maybe did 2-3 years ago.
It will be interesting if we move on from Devin Williams. I kind of feel like they will if get a nice package with how deep our bullpen has proven to be AND our ability to find backend guys. But if do it in the offseason, it won't be as much backlash; much like the BUrnes trade vs Hader one.
It is awesome though that we're in the playoffs in a supposed transition year and we legit have a rising team on our hands yet. Its been a fun season and future seems bright.

The Brewers definitely should/will pick up Montas. I don't think it's that big. They've pitching lab'ed him into a good pitcher again.
