Europe can enjoy the summer/fall season because now they’ve opened back up and are on their way to a COVID resurgence, even if they can manage it better.
In terms of the MLB, they have to play through it or they’re admitting that they will probably also not play the 2021 season if not or it’ll be a bubble or very delayed.

Yankees should play the Orioles right now.
If their decision is to cancel, which I doubt, then this is.
Otherwise for now this is the last domino.

Cannot believe, on this 472nd day of July, the month is almost over.

Re: ATL: 14 Marlins Test Positive for COVID-19; Season in Jeopardy
The MLB’s choice is to play with these taxi squads which were somewhat of a mitigation planned (they didn’t do great, also hard to plan for) or stop the season and arguably admit they are not going to play next year either. Even if the US locks down again (it won’t, nobody will again other than regional ones) and the risk is 1/15th of what it is now, it could still easily happen next March or April.
The vaccine MIGHT be ready and effective by early March but they’re basically putting the fate of the league and their careers on that happening.
So I think they’ll keep playing. It will be interesting to see how they make up these games.

I mean it’s a valid related point, especially given closer contact and roster makeup. But they’re probably gonna have to just figure it out and deal with an outbreak or pray for none to happen.

By next March, treatment options for COVID will likely be significantly more effective than they are right now, even in absence of a vaccine. Just being able to shorten hospital stays by a few days can have a meaningful impact.
I personally think we'll see a vaccine before the end of 2020 - the pressure is just too great on these companies competing with each other and on the FDA to approve it. It could take a year for them to make enough doses, but even if you get the most vulnerable vaccinated in the short term, that'll make a big difference.
In the short term though, a teamwide failure like this one in Florida has such deleterious effects on the league. The incubation period for this virus is ~10 days. So, will that mean that the Marlins, Phillies, Braves, and Mets could all be at risk of testing positive in the near future. And what are you going to do - pause those teams for a few days to make sure they test negative? What does that mean for their opponents who are just sitting there with no baseball to play?

They have taxi squads and there are guys hanging around to sign.
What’s up with the Braves and Mets? Not following. Did a player test positive around their series?
Yes, 6 months is a long time and things can improve, but we’ve already come a long way in the first 5 months. If the odds of an outbreak are 1/5 of that in March (after a long winter of everyone indoors, I doubt it) what is the line drawn? So hospital stays and capacity are even shorter for mostly elderly people. Do the players still “risk it” if this has a chance of happening again? Who is at risk here? The players or hospital capacity? I’d wager that this outbreak won’t go too far beyond the players. So is it a risk for the players? In which case, there will very likely still be risk for the 2021 season.

They played the Braves right before the Phillies series. Then the Braves played the Mets. The incubation period lasting that long means that they could have infected the Braves - or gotten from the Braves - before they traveled to Philly.

Oh yeah, though given the numbers of players, I would think someone would have tested positive at this point on one of those teams. Otherwise all 11 players from the Marlins would have been on the back end of the intubation period, which is possible, but seems unlikely.

It's a little concerning it's the catchers since they would have spent the most time in close proximity with marlins batters.
Hopefully we don't see a bunch of positive tests in the coming days.

On one hand the winning percentages may be how they have to do it. On the other hand every sports media person from Buster down to the intern at WSSP will be panacing because a pro sports shutdown will claim many more of their jobs.

Fair point on perspective of these guys.

Milwaukee just played its first meaningful live sports game in almost 5 months and he's bringing the NFL into it.

If Bill Michaels did a Bucks postgame call-in show after the Bucks won game 7 of the NBA Finals, I'd give him 5, maybe 10 minutes before he asked Can the Packers win one too this season? Then segue that into a 2 hour Packer discussion.

He wasn't always like this. I remember back during the Big 3 era, he was all about the Bucks.
