2011 MLB Draft Thread (June 6-8)

I don't really follow the MLB Draft that close, but thought we'd get a thread up with it being less than a week away). Brewers have #12 and #15. Law's mock:
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft/20 ... ckDraft2.0Taylor Jungmann, RHP, Texas
Still hearing the same batch of names here, primarily Jungmann, Mikie Mahtook, Cory Spangenberg and possibly Lindor or Springer. I'm still surprised by how little I'm hearing Jungmann's name, given how good he is. I'm also hearing Utah's C.J. Cron in the Brewers' mix at No. 12 or 15, more likely 15 since he won't go in between the picks. Taylor Guerrieri's also an outside possibility.
C.J. Cron, 1B, Utah
Cron's a safe, signable plan at this spot, with big raw power and the potential to replace Prince Fielder in a year or two. If Mahtook's here, they'd probably take him, and Spangenberg would fit the bill as an athletic position player with a good swing who'll sign quickly, since this pick is unprotected.

I don't follow as closely as other drafts because there is less coverage to follow and I don't see these guys play. But this is supposed to be a stacked draft. The baseball draft has that interesting dynamic of high school vs college, especially when it comes to pitchers. Ultimate boom or bust in most cases, and the chances of the bust coming from arm troubles(Rogers, Mark) are so high. Just thinking out loud, hope we get a college arm that might be ready sooner and then a high school bat or arm.

I prefer high school arms to college arms unless the college pitcher is a stud like David Price.

It all depends on the prospects you're comparing. I think its tough to make blanket statements either way. Obviously, if there is a legitimate stud ceiling HS arm, you take him. But if there is a HS arm that has only a slightly bigger ceiling than a college arm, I can see the argument behind taking the college guy, as HSers in general have more risk. If I recall correctly, we've been burned by HS arms a ton as well with injuries.

It's such a big crapshoot. We went the college route 2 years ago Arnett and Heckathorn and they didn't work out although Heckathorn has had a few good games. But he's still in Brevard County.

College arms are huge risks because their coaches work them like dogs. They don't care if they get hurt after they leave, they just care about helping them win games now. If you draft a high school pitcher, his arm is still relatively fresh and you can watch his innings and pitch counts.
College pitchers regularly go 120+ pitches.

Also, Seid has to be on the hot seat. He's had two drafts and the best prospect we've gotten from them is probably Scooter Gennett.
He's given us Eric Arnett and Dylan Covey in the 1st round.
His highest signed pick from last year is a college pitcher who has a 5.68 ERA, 26 walks and 26 strikeouts in 44 innings in A ball.

I have to be honest, if you held a gun to my head without looking I couldn't name the best bat in the system. I know the supposed best arm is Rogers, but he currently has a pristine 13.20 ERA.

Gamel?

Gamel technically doesn't "qualify" because he has too many major league at bats. Best bat is Komatsu.

To put a positive spin on the offensive side, I think we're still looking pretty good there for the next few years. We have:
Hart-through 2013
Weeks-through 2015
Braun-through 2020
McGehee-through 2014 (including arby)
Gomez-through 2013 (including arby)
Morgan-through 2014 (including arby)
Lucroy-through 2016 (including arby)
Gamel-through 2017 (I think, including arby, assuming he's up next year)
Now, I'd like a better CF than those two, but I think that can still be a pretty productive platoon given the overall D and speed, as long as Morgan continues to carry a high OBP and Gomez isn't batting high in the order.
Prince is a big bat to lose, but if Gamel can fill in there our only immediate need is SS, which is big.
Pitching is a more dire situation. I don't think we re-sign both Marcum and Greinke. We're going to need one or two guys to be legit by the start of 2013.

Got to Frankie Piliere's chat late so he didn't answer my question. Tweeted him though and got a response back.
He has the Brewers taking Archie Bradley 12th which kind of shocked me because he's a two sport athlete with a commitment to Oklahoma so he'll require a pretty hefty signing bonus.
I asked him if there is anything to the Archie Bradley rumor and he said yes. I also asked him who else the Brewers were looking at at 12 and 15. He said college bats like Mahtook and Springer and then there were the rumors of Texas righty Taylor Jungmann. Also said everything was in play.
I kind of want to see Bradley fall to 12 just to find out if the Brewers take him. I expect them to go conservative with a fairly easy sign at 15 because the pick is unprotected.

Yeah they can't take any chances with signability with 15

Law has us taking Jungmann (12th - This could be Mahtook if he should get here, or an outside chance at George Springer or Gray.) and Baez (15th - Could be Guerrieri if he gets to this unprotected pick, or Gray; C.J. Cron, whom I put here last time, doesn't appear to be in their mix.). He's got Bradley going 7th, Mahtook going 9th and Springer going 18th.
Jungman
Jungmann is one of several three-year performers among college pitchers in this year's draft, and he does it while looking like he isn't even breaking a sweat. Jungmann can sit 91-93 but go back for 94-95 whenever he wants it, and he pairs it with a hammer curveball at 75-78 with two-plane break.
He's a strike-thrower who commands the ball to both sides of the plate with his fastball and breaking ball. That precise command is part of why he rarely needs to use his hard, mid-80s changeup.
His delivery finishes with a "head-bobble," but it doesn't happen until after release, so the ordinary concerns about a head-jerk reducing command don't seem to apply here. He comes across his body slightly because he starts on the extreme third-base side of the rubber but lands on line to the plate as if he'd started in the center.
Jungmann doesn't use his lower half as much as most power pitchers, but he doesn't show a lot of effort in his arm action and he has no trouble throwing quality strikes, so I'm not sure you'd want to tinker with his delivery either; at most you might try to lengthen his stride a little to see if he adds any velocity.
Baez
Baez has crazy bat speed and big future power potential, but needs to find a position and show a little more energy on the field.
At the plate Baez unleashes on every pitch with a max-effort swing that, when he squares a ball up, produces loud, hard contact. He doesn't shorten up or ever use another approach beyond "swing with all you've got," and he can get too power-happy and start to swing uphill.
He still projects to hit for plus power, but the potential to hit for average will depend on his willingness to cut down his swing when needed.
On defense, he has a plus arm and quick transfers, meaning he should be able to play third base if (as is likely) he outgrows shortstop. He has also caught a little in the past, and I know scouts who like him there, but the general sentiment is that he's not interested in the position.
But the biggest issue for Baez is how he acts on the field. He's more than just flashy, he's very showy, and he doesn't always play like he's fully prepared or engaged. He has as much potential impact with the bat as any prep player in this draft, but the need for a new position and questions about his on-field demeanor are going to hold down his stock.

I think it's time to forget about Gamel as Fielder's or Hart's or McGehee or even gomez or betencourt or Lucroy or bernie brewer's replacement. gamel's train came and he los t his ticket and was kicked off three miles back two years ago. how old is gamel now? 42? he's been at AAA since my mama gave birth to dip n dots. Gamel wasn't even called up when morgan was injured. We went with Boggs instead. and last year, when the brewers needed a "hitter" they went with Cain. Why not Gamel? not good enough? or injured again? Was Gamel injured whe n boggs came up this year? he must have been . why else would we have called up Wade bogg's grandson? gamel injured? again? NO ! way!! and like he's ever going to be healthy enough to play more than 50 games a year? Sure he will! he'll be healthy enough to play to least 67 games - all at AAA!
it's way past time to cut the apron strings with Gamel. He is not going to be that great white hope! he doesn't even know how to box.
