Was it worth it to give up Lawrie for Marcum? I was afraid Lawrie was going to turn into an all-star and it looks like he'll be on his way soon.

.340 with 7 HR 6 doubles and 4 triples and 20 RBI in just 27 games. Nice!

In a word, no.

Value-wise, it isn't even close that he wasn't. However, the verdict is still out depending on how far Marcum helps us go.

Having good starting pitching > good hitting IMO. And I think Marcum's been really good this year.

But, if we don't get long term production out of Marcum, and Lawrie continues to dominate, then obviously this would be a fail. But I wouldn''t bash Doug too much for this one.

If we can sign him to an extension and he continues to preform close to this season say for the next 3-4 years it would be a slam dunk yes . I'm pretty sure 95 percent of the fans would say they are happy with his results this year . He is no Cal Eldrid ; but he will do .

I don't believe this year was do-or-die just because Prince will be gone next year, so my answer is no. There will still be a lot of talent in Milwaukee for a few years. If a couple more key contributors were likely to walk as well, then they would have been right to trade Lawrie for the best pitcher they could get and mortgage the future for a run at the title.

The brewers still have plenty of offense in the pipeline and no pitching that will be subtantially better than a replacement player in the next 2 years. Trading Lawrie for Marcum is easily a deal you make given where the Brewers were at with a legit shot at the World Series now, and playoffs in the next few years.

100% incorrect.

It wasn't JJ Hardy for Carlos Gomez, but it appears to be a negative move to this juncture, IMO. It will have become a solid move if we could extend him.

I think the Brewers would have made the playoffs easily without Marcum in the rotation but Lawrie upgrading the 3rd base position since early in the season (wouldn't have gotten injured in Milwaukee most likely since his issue was circumstance dependent). Marcum is on pace for about a 4 WAR and we're leading the division by 8.5. Lawrie has almost a 2 WAR in 105 PA's. Our starting 3rd baseman is at -.1. I don't think Lawrie quite keeps up this pace, but reasonably Lawrie would have been worth 5-6 wins to the Crew over 4 times as many bats as he's received. So the Crew might even be in a better position than they are now.

As far as the argument that Greinke nixed the trade if the Brewers had not already acquired Marcum, do you really think he thought he had a better chance in Kansas City otherwise? Not likely.

Doug could have held on to Villanueva this year who was pitching great until hurting his elbow (3.40 ERA) and re-signed Cappy.

A rotation of: 1. Greinke, 2. Gallardo, 3. Wolf, 4. Villa, 5. Cappy (Narveson)
Lineup of: 1. Weeks, 2. Hart, 3. Braun, 4. Fielder, 5. Lawrie, 6. Lucroy, 7. Morgan, 8. Hairston/Betancore

could have been dangerous. Lawrie would have helped us prevent the lulls we've had offensively without Weeks, Morgan, Hart, etc.

Yeah, Peralta is on the cusp and we might have found a diamond in the rough in Fiers. Plus they plan on fast tracking Jungmann and/or Bradley. Then there's Thornburg. There's more promising minor league pitching prospects than hitters.
