Trade Rumors Thread - Brewers Open for Business (30)

Two bits of note today. One is that Milwaukee is looking around for a SS but the pickings are slim.

The other is ESPN's Bowden says the Brewers will trade Greinke if they're not in contention at the deadline.

1. Zack Greinke, Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin shocked the baseball world back in December 2010 when he acquired Zack Greinke from the Royals in exchange for Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Odorizzi. Contract negotiations between the Brewers and Greinke’s agent, Casey Close, have been professional, but there is a significant gap in terms of length and dollars in their talks. If the Brewers aren’t in the pennant race come July, Greinke will be traded.

That doesn’t mean the Brewers won't sign Greinke back as a free agent after he tests the market because he is very happy in Milwaukee, as his home/road splits this year indicate (3-0, 1.30 ERA/2-1, 4.91). The Brewers know they’re not going to get the same level package they gave the Royals in exchange for Greinke, but they will at least get two significant prospects and a throw-in. The only teams that legitimately will be bidding for Greinke will be the Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins and maybe the New York Yankees.

I really don't want Melvin trading Greinke.

I'd be surprised if they dealt Greinke, frankly. Marcum will go, but I feel this team truly believes they can re-sign Greinke, so they'll keep him around.

Hey, if we keep playing like ****, I'd love a deal where we trade him and then sign him back - best of all outcomes if we're out of the race. We suck even harder, get a few prospects, and then get him back. #dreaming

That actually makes some sense. You're probably almost as likely to sign him on the open market as you are to re-sign him at the end of the year. The only reason they wouldn't want to trade him (besides the obvious reason that they still think they can make the playoffs of course) is if they think they can extend him before he hits free agency. It doesn't sound like they're anywhere close to that now, though.

I have a hard time picturing him resigning here if hes traded away. I get why it could happen, I just don't see it.

a decision has to be made, either way
A. trade Grinke, Marcum, Krod, Hart whoever else and give up on this year and next
or
B. keep Grinke, AND sign a top FA SP in the off season

just keeping Grinke is NOT enough
we need an upgrade to our starting pitching
spend the $ on pitching and go cheap with hitting

If he's traded to a team that offers what he wants in an extension, then obviously not. But if he holds out for the most money, the Brewers are just as much a candidate as anyone. In fact, they would be more of a candidate. He would never choose the Yankees or Red Sox over the Brewers if the Brewers' offer was in the same ballpark.

He certainly wouldn't take it personally if they traded him, either. They would obviously be trading him from a team that has dug itself a deep hole to a team in contention. Most players don't complain about that. If he likes Milwaukee and thinks they will bounce back next year, then he would definitely consider coming back.

I just hope if we do decide to sell that DM gets some top prospects in return and we dont have another disaster sort of sell mode trade like we had when he traded Lee and Nelson Cruz for Coco and garbage.

Going into this year, I might have thought the same thing but unless we're really low balling him, I don't think this is true or he probably would have signed already.

Agreed, and I really don't have faith in pulling off the trade and re-sign move.

This trade being bad for the Brewers is largely a myth.

Nelson Cruz was put on outright waivers for EVERY TEAM in MLB to pick him up. NO ONE DID. Texas got him back and he became the 35 homer guy we know today.

Coco was reasonably solid. The Brewers got 2 comp picks for him, including one that was used on Odorizzi. Odorizzi is now a top 50-60 prospect for the Royals.

It really annoys me when people say this wasn't a bad trade for the Brewers.

1. So just because he got put on waivers and any team could have picked him up makes it better? That just means the Brewers missed twice. Not exactly something I'd be proud of. Especially when you look at what he was doing in Nashville. People say he was old but he got to Nashville at age 24 and posted an .872 OPS in a little over 200 at bats. Got sent back to Nashville in 2006 and posted a .907 OPS at age 25, great numbers and hardly old for the league.

2. Cordero at that time was an underperforming reliever with a club option. If he doesn't pitch lights out after the trade, his option likely doesn't get picked up. The only reason we took him was Turnbow because it was at that time he started to suck.

3. Mench was completely useless. He was basically a weak side platoon player and that's all he ever should have been.

4. Cordero got comp picks, but so did Lee. That's a wash, not something that tips the scales in the Brewers favor.

Say the brewers get back in the division hunt. How much would you trade for Starlin Castro? If at all?

I wouldn't even bother with Castro. He would get more than he's worth.

I realize Castro is young and his minors numbers are all from under the age of 22 mostly and maybe just hasn't grown into his power, but I'd like to see him OPS over .800 before I ogle all over him.

I'd like to see him get his OBP more than 10 points above his batting average.

Could Melvin have made a better trade? Probably. But this was far from the J.J. Hardy trade.

They thought they could contend with Cordero because they had a ton of offensive young guys. making peanuts. They very well could have made the playoffs in 06 and/or 07.

1) It makes it better because no one thought the guy was worth much. Every team in MLB could have had him for 50k and no one did. Texas got lucky. Even if the Brewers waited, they wouldn't have gotten a ton for him anyway. He was behind Hart and Fielder.

Mench may have been worthless but he was in the same boat as Cruz: A failed prospect. They traded failed hitting OF prospects, Texas's worked out, Milwaukee's didn't.

Cruz wasn't behind anyone. All we had in LF or RF was Jenkins and Hart. Even if we couldn't trade Jenkins, Cruz at the very least is a cheaper and better alternative to platoon with him in a corner outfield spot.

Relievers aren't worth a whole lot. They thought they could contend because they traded for a reliever? That's possibly the dumbest reason for the trade ever, it wouldn't surprise me if Melvin actually believed that.

At the time of the trade, Mench had 1806 major league ABs. Cruz had 5.
