Game 2: Rockies @ Brewers - 7:10 PM

Garza vs Lyles

I know we're all in a really great mood today, so I thought I'd throw cold water on all of that with this from a Fangraphs post:

2. The Brewers have a real chance to be terrible.

I promise I believed this before they got destroyed by Colorado in on Opening Day, and this isn’t a reaction to the beating they took yesterday. But among the 25 or so teams who are projected to at least be respectable in 2015, Milwaukee is the one that I think could just completely fall apart. As I mentioned in the division preview, this is a team with zero depth, so their 77 win projection is based on full seasons of their frontline players; that’s not a reasonable expectation, and the second-line players are almost uniformly awful.

The Brewers have no margin for error, especially in the rotation, where their options to replace a struggling or injured starter are all replacement level scrubs. With Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza on the wrong side of 30, and Mike Fiers and Jimmy Nelson on the wrong side of reliable, this is a rotation that seems likely to need multiple fill-ins throughout the year. But there just aren’t any real options, and if Lohse hits a wall — he’s 36 and playing the weak-contact game, which is a dangerous way to live — at the same time that Fiers’ arm starts barking again, they’re going to be in serious trouble.

The NL Central is not going to be an easy division this year, and unless their offense leads the league in runs scored, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Brewers won 67 games instead of 77.

Bottoming out wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but it would probably mean that the few guys we're hoping are going to help us win in the future probably won't.

I had them at 79 wins, and I'd feel better going the under on that than the over. I agree with the points the article made. The thing that really sucks is that a baseball season gets really boring really quick if you aren't contending for the playoffs, unless you are tracking some up and coming studs that are getting regular MLB PT. I foresee a pretty boring season overall. But I'm in the "time to rebuild" boat. Want a high pick and if we are struggling, I'd have pretty much everyone out there to see what kind of trade value they have in terms of prospects.

I'm not really attached or in love with any particular player on the team and I hate that we're constantly trying to compete, even though we have no shot of it, so a complete bottom out would really be the ideal scenario for me.

I know it would have been really hard to trade guys when you're roughly a .500 club if healthy, but I've wanted to rebuild since the middle of 2012. If they had done so, right now we'd probably be talking about what an exciting time it is to be a Brewer fan. Instead, we're looking at an all-out rebuild for 5 years or so, not to mention a whole slew of squandered assets. Let's not get stuck lamenting the same thing again 5 years from now.

10 years ago the Brewers were like the Cubs. The farm system was just sick. And they parlayed that into basically two good seasons and .500 baseball overall, yet Mark A gets all kinds of credit for his aggressive win-now approach. I don't buy it. It would have been hard to be any worse with all the talent they had coming up through the minors 10 years ago. Every year, a couple more guys joins the list of great trade chips who they Brewers held onto way too long because they thought their mediocre squad had a chance to do some real damage. This year it's probably Lohse and Garza. Soon it could well be Lucroy and Gomez. Just trade them all please.

Having Braun miss the second game of the season because of his ribs AGAIN is very discouraging. After the end of last season I can't remember the last time I cared this little in the first week of the season.

Hey, we aren't down 4-0 after the top of the 1st. That's progress.

I actually saw Braun stretching in the dugout yesterday after his injury and then pulling the trainer into the clubhouse. I was wondering if he was injured and then he came out of the game.

Not a bad crowd here tonight. They need more metal detectors. Takes a while to get in

Good to see that the staff has already taught Lind how to run bases like a Brewer.
