Parra to the Orioles for Davies

Post#1 » by ReasonablySober » Fri Jul 31, 2015 1:15 am

We've had enough chatter online that something could be going down. LookoutLanding had the first rumor and now Ken is backing it up. Makes sense to talk about it here:

Like I said, I don't love that return, but I admittedly know little about Davies. His description and even numbers make him seem FIers like. Hopefully he could have that kind of impact.

BA's #8 prospect for the O's.

The most consistent pitcher in Norfolk’s rotation during the first half, Davies keeps hitters off-balance with an 88-92 mph fastball and an above-average changeup while mixing in an average slider. Ranked among the International League leaders in ERA, Davies throws all his pitches for strikes and could be in Baltimore’s plans for a September callup.

Rank 3 on the O's prospects list on mlb.com. Who else can we trade for with the O's if not Zach Davies? Dylan Bundy?

Hope he's right.

And Bundy was the #2 overall prospect in baseball before his injury. He's still the O's best prospect. Can't imagine his value has dropped that much. I think if we could have gotten him it would have been in the Gomez deal. Obviously would be thrilled if it happened, though.

Ya that'd be ridiculous if we could get him or even Gausman

Qi am guessing Melvin waits until the end to deal Parra, hoping someone is desperate and would overpay, unless of course he gets something he can't refuse.

Of course he's going to trade him. There's no reason not to. Nothing to fret about here. Doug and Mark may be more win now, but they're not insane. They're obviously not trying to win this season. if they liked Parra enough they could even just re-sign him in the offseason. It's highest bidder as of right now.

Lind, K-Rod, Segura, Braun, and Smith are the x-factors because they have more than 1 year on their contracts. I at least want to see the first 3 traded, although you still get the sense they are trying to compete next year. For Gomez they were getting a strong #2 in Wheeler, now a polished, cf replacement prospect among others. If they trade, say, Lind, I would think it'd be for a 3rd baseman who can potentially help next year, unless they got that for Parra or someone else. Then they could play Santana at 1B.

I'd just keep Lucroy, Braun, Davis, Gennett, fill the rest of the positions with acquired or existing prospects, add 1 or 2 to the SP staff, and run with that starting in Sept and going into next season. So somewhere between what they'll probably do and the full rebuild some prefer.

Rosenthal is saying it's for Davies, straight up. Huh.

Reasonable, I guess. That's probably right on the line of what you could get out of a 1st round pick. Less of a guarantee in obtaining the 1st rounder and the result of the 1st rounder, but a bit more of a higher ceiling for said 1st round comp pick.

Seems like a wide-range on how good of a prospect he is. If you trust the numbers he's highly regarded. If you look at his stuff you're probably less impressed from what I've read.

Did we just trade Parra for a younger Mike Fiers?

That is what it seems like.

Differences - He's 22 and almost MLB-ready, Fiers was still playing college ball at 22.

His K/9 is low right now, but again, Fiers was playing college ball at this time. Fiers came in and K'd 9 or 10 per 9.

In terms of stuff and velocity - similar. And Davies could start developing more K stuff.

2.84 ERA, 7.2 K/9 at AAA at age 22 is pretty solid. He's younger than most guys in his league so I think he still has decent upside. Career 7.8 K/9 isn't elite but not poor either.

Well I'd rather have Davies than mitch haniger so overall the Para deal last year was a success.

Banda, the pitcher we traded for Parra, is also doing well. I basically look at this trade as Davies vs. Banda and who is better moving forward.

Much better to trade a rental for a pitcher like this than give a guy with similar stuff $10m a year in free agency or trade a top prospect for him (Suppan, Wolf, Marcum, Lohse).
Wut we've got here is... faaailure... to communakate.
