Brewers Game Thread: June
There wasn't a thread for the Twins series and obviously not going to be super active game threads as the season goes on so maybe monthly ones makes sense? Just throwing it out there as an idea. Lumped April/May together since the month is closer to over than not.

Jungmann has been a disappointment for me early on. This is a big year for him to prove he can be a legit part of part of the rebuild and he's not off to a promising start.

The Jungmann thing is a legit surprise this spring. I didn't expect him to be a top of the rotation starter but I didn't expect him to look lost.

It's been fun seeing Braun dominate the past few games. The Twins straight up haven't been able to get him out.

He doesn't have command of his curve right now either but it's his fastball velocity that concerns me. He's been sitting between 88-90mph today on the gun. That's not going to cut it. Not like he was throwing gas but I thought he was consistently 92-94 last year.

5 walks, 9 outs for Jungmann. Ouch. I knew last year was a fluke, but I didn't think he would be bad.
Braun and Carter doing wonders for their trade value.

I had to check on Carter's service time this morning. He's not a FA until 2019. If he's killing it in mid July, maybe his value is huge. But I wonder if teams will want to see a full season's worth of production.

It's likely only a matter of when, not if his batting average sits in that .220ish range as it always has with an OBP in the .310-.320 range and tons of K's.
I'm fine with the signing, but he's not bringing anything of note in a trade come July. This is why he was signed for less than three million.

Dont agree there. Cleveland got Kaminsky for a terrible Brandon Moss. Who also made substantially more than Carter. I think there will be a market and a solid one at that.

That Braun guy has started the season pretty well. Wonder if Stearns will be able to find any nips at the deadline.

Braun makes me abandon logic and sense. He's one of the few athletes in my lifetime that I would be legitimately depressed seeing in another jersey. I understand that he could potentially fetch a monster haul this summer that would go a long ways towards rebuilding the team, but damn. A big part of me wants him to be a lifetime Brewer.

Trade Braun for sure.
Looking like a bottom 3 team and I'm loving it.

I can totally understand this even though I have the opposite feeling. Braun has been the face of the franchise, and after so many years of having nothing, he represents the Brewers having an elite player for the first time since the 80's. However, I think they need to move on from that era. It's obvious why a trade would be good for the team in the position they're in, but I also think it would be good for the fans. It's time to let go. The first 10 years of the Mark A were a big disappointment considering how much talent they had amassed before he bought the team, and Braun has come to epitomize that underachievement, what with his foolish outs on the basepaths, nagging injuries, dubious fielding, and impatience at the plate. And then there's the PED scandal and how he handled it, which still colors my opinion of him to a great extent. If they can get something for him, they've got to. I will like the team more when he's gone. I want to move on. I guess the difference is that I've already gone through that phase of disappointment and depression with regard to him, and now I'm looking only forward.

Re: Brewers Game Thread: April/May
The Brewers occupy last place in the NL Central, with the second-worst run differential in all of baseball. Most of the building blocks for the next contending Milwaukee team sit in the minors, with the fruits of recent drafts, international signings and shrewd trades starting to round into form. That leaves few young players with breakout potential worth watching on the major league roster . . . except, apparently, for Scooter Gennett.
Gennett broke into the big leagues in impressive fashion in 2013, hitting .324 in 69 games. Even in that impressive debut, though, you could see the holes in his game. A free swinger, he ranked near the bottom of the league with a 4.3% walk rate. And while he showed some propensity to hit doubles, a 5'10", 185-pounder named “Scooter” isn’t a great bet to suddenly hit for a ton of power. Fewer balls fell into play safely over the next two seasons, such that in 2015, Gennett batted just .264/.294/.381, looking like the kind of replacement-level player you’d want to cut loose as soon as a half-decent alternative emerged.
Not anymore. A few days shy of his 26th birthday, Gennett suddenly looks like a totally different hitter. Through 18 games, Gennett’s hitting a career-best .258/.361/.516 and is walking three times more often than his career rate, posting a lofty 13.9% mark this year. Most exciting of all, he’s crushing the ball: His hard-hit average has surged to career-best territory, and his soft-hit average ranks among the lowest in the league. Numbers aside, watch Gennett this season and you’re seeing a player cranking balls with authority: Before this season, how many times can you remember him hitting a ball as hard and deep as he did on this opposite-field homer(!) off Philadelphia's Jared Eickhoff on Sunday?
Given how aggressive Brewers GM David Stearns has been about shopping veterans for future help, Gennett’s drastic improvement could end up benefiting some other team if it continues (ditto for Ryan Braun, who looks like vintage Braun so far this year). Still, given that Gennett was so punchless last season that he lost his job and got sent to Triple A for a while, this would still count as a big break for the Crew’s goal of contending in 2018 and beyond.

Re: Brewers Game Thread: April/May
It's pretty rare for a hitter who hasn't taken walks at a good rate to change his stripes and take walks at the rate Scooter has this year, so usually i'd chalk that up as a small sample fluke. Watching him though this year, his change in approach looks real. Looks like he realized and actually took to heart that if he ever wanted remain a starter at secondbase, he couldn't continue walking at such a poor rate. As an added bonus by being more selective, he's swinging at more hitter's pitches vs a pitcher's pitch, thus being able to drive the ball more.
Given Scooter's defensive limitations, he'll have to remain plus offensively to be a viable starter at secondbase.

We do seem to have an array of middle infield prospects in the minors.
Besides the minors, assuming Arcia takes over shortstop next season, either of Villar and Rivera would be plus defenders at sceondbase. How they'd hit as an everyday players remains to be seen, but odds are we'll at least get a full season this year to judge Villar at the plate. He's shown a great eye so far given the 10 drawn walks. Rivera didn't hit much in the minors, but he's fabulous defensively.
