Holy ****...what a tragedy. Only 24 years old, so talented, seemed very well liked. Tragic.

ETA I'm sorry, this is tangential, but how does Hannah Storm continue to get rolled out for every tragic story? This probably isn't a personal story for her like others have been, but still, what a mental toll it must take to do this over and over again.

The dude loved playing the game of baseball and was such a joy to see playing. Couldn't think of a worse situation for this to happen to given the enormous popularity that Jose had with the Cuban American people in the Miami area. Such an awful day...

He seemed like one of the coolest baseball players I've ever seen and a great guy off the field too. This is absolutely tragic.

Man oh man. This is just terrible news for the Marlins and all of baseball.

I saw Jose Fernandez his rookie season at Busch stadium. The Marlins ended up losing the game but, wow was Fernandez impressive. AB after AB he had the meat of the Cardinals order whiffing at his off-speed stuff. It was clinical. I remember turning to my partner's father at the time (a lifelong Cardinals fan...no wonder that relationship didn't last) and stating: "I'll state the obvious: this kid is really really good." Sure enough, he won the ROY. He was destined for greatness. The fact he had just found out his partner was pregnant this past week makes it even more tragic.

Have any more details come out? I saw a picture of an overturned speed boat on some rocks. What the hell? What time did it happen (I.e. Was it early morning like 3 AM)

I literally gasped when I heard the news this morning. He was so young. So talented. And he and his family went through so much to get to this point.

Just devastating. Off the top of my head, I can't remember a death of an active player as big or as shocking as this one during my lifetime.

To be clear, that's when the boat was discovered on a routine patrol. The accident took place earlier. I'm not sure how often they go out on patrol, but I think I heard this morning that there was no indication that anything had happened - no call into the coast guard or anything. They just came across it as they went out.

Le Batard looked absolutely shattered by this on ESPN today. Couldn't even make it through his segment.

Dee Gordon homered leading off for the Marlins tonight. His first HR of the year.

Definitely one of the more emotional moments in sports. Had to fight back tears myself

Sounds like even if he survived he would've been charged with manslaughter (among other charges) as it was just determined he was the driver...and obviously intoxicated (booze & coke). Tough situation.
