His defense won't ever be good, but it never was. But a natural hitter like Braun is certainly capable of being a monster at the plate into his late 30s.

I think that Braun is rightfully a bit worried to take the same "supplements" that Big Papi did to rebound in his mid/late 30s.

The odds are very much against it, especially when you consider all the injuries he's had. It's likely to only get worse. For everyone who has a resurgence in their mid-30's, there are many more players who just fall off a cliff. This decline is a long time in the making, too. It's not like it's just one bad year. He's been in decline since 2012, as any statistical model based on age would predict. And the smart money is on the decline continuing to steepen at his age, and that's before even weighting the model with injury history.

2020 is really the one bad year with Braun. He may regress a bit more and will be a bit more of a part-time player but he's still a passable 4th OF type at worst in those years probably. 2020 he may have fully regressed and that's the only year that his salary is a bit of an issue in the scheme of the payroll. May not be a huge issue by then, though.

I don't think the contract will cause us to lose anyone, but it may impede some extra signings to help out in that year. Beyond that, hopefully they limit him accordingly and he's a decent player that helps the team out.

If Braun sticks in LF is it pretty much inevitable they will have to move 1 of Santana, Brinson or Phillips? I would think next year that both Brinson and Phillips are going to get every opportunity to be on the MLB team full-time if healthy. I can't see them wanting to move Santana and don't think Braun is going anywhere. Going to be interesting how it plays out. Then again no idea if Brinson/Phillips will be "AAAA" type players.

Jimmy needs surgery and will probably miss a lot of time next year. :(

Other options? Prefer Hader in the pen. Sabathia will probably only get a 1-year deal, but Chatwood would be a better investment.

Already had the surgery I think Tuesday.

I think that was just exploratory, for diagnostic purposes. Could be wrong.

Nope. Had the surgery Tuesday and had a labrum repair. DS said he will miss a chunk of next year

I don't see that happening. Papi was able to rest his body by being a full time DH.

Braun on the flip side regularly has needed days off because of various strains and pulls and has to play in the field. I expect decline, but would be happy to get another .850 OPS season next year as he's put up this year.

His struggles with RISP this year though is likely more of a statistical anomaly than something which should be the norm next year and beyond. Just last year Braun had a 1.088 OPS with RISP and in 2015 it was a 1.057 OPS.

Says it will need repair?

PITTSBURGH - The Milwaukee Brewers will enter the 2018 season facing raised expectations but without the player generally regarded as their top starting pitcher for an undetermined amount of time.

Right-hander Jimmy Nelson had the partially torn anterior labrum in his pitching shoulder repaired on Tuesday by well-known surgeon Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

While the procedure was deemed successful, it was extensive enough that the team will now head into the off-season knowing the 28-year-old won't be available for a "chunk" of 2018.
