Pads are claiming no deal has been struck.

It would be hilarious if Machado leaked this "deal" so Harper would sign a deal for 10/$301M and then Machado comes back over the top with 10/$302M.

Seeing that as well. My conspiracy theory/guess is that it isn't as crazy as a deal being "reported" and suddenly he signs for a different amount or different team. The MLB account has reported it so it's gotta be the Padres. But I could see them quibbling between $280 million and $300 million and his camp leaking the deal and forcing the Padres to not want to the bad guy publicly and lose him over that final amount.

This is going to be my ringtone for whenever I think I don't need to have a condom on my person at all times.

Remember when the Padres gave $100M to Eric Hosmer? Good times.

Machado deal seems quite ludacrisp to me. They'll be regretting the second half of that contract.

Isn't Rule #1 of FA that if you overpay a jerk and an idiot from a winning team, he will be a nightmare on a losing team ?

Pretty solid deal. The Rockies still have it pretty good in paying an above average rotation a grand total of $8 million combined this year...and $3.3 of that is Chad Bettis.

Wish it was the AL just because the damn NL is so loaded with depth/good teams. Obviously most AL teams were out of the bidding so whatever.

It's interesting because there are technically no deferrals.

But they are essentially deferring the final 3 years or so (assuming he's pretty good into his mid 30s) and they basically will have to cut him if he's washed up.

I think it's a flat $25.5 across the whole thing.

hmm. nice. 25.5 per for harper isn't that bad. much better for the phillies than machado.

I'd personally rather have Machado given defense but I do understand what the Phillies did here. Paying less/year for Harper now but 8+ years from now they're gonna have to probably eat the cost on an overpaid player.

EDIT: Not sure how legit it is, but on Cot's contracts he is getting $11.5 this year and then $27.5 across the rest of it, basically.

They'll be charged $25.5 for luxury tax purposes as it is the AAV that is factored into that.

Bobby Bonilla will still be getting deferred salary from the Mets when Bryce's contract expires in 2031.
