I like the trade a lot for the Cardinals unfortunately.

Alcantara as a headliner and the overall package seems light to me for a player as good as Ozuna.

Carlos Santana to Phillies for 3/60.

Zack Cozart to Angels for 3/38. Billy Eppler is absolutely cleaning it up for the Angels, what an offseason thus far for them.

It will be interesting to see what Cozart does the next few years because he was great last season, but he had never hit like that before.

Rangers got Mat Moore in a pure salary dump. Might not have been a bad buy low tbh. Has a club option for next season.

Hasn't Matt Moore been garbage the last few seasons?

Yup but at this cost it’s a why not kind of thing. Payroll this low and has no contract commitment after this year.

Straight salary dump for both teams. More importantly it allows the Dodgers to dip below the salary tax threshold for 2018 after they dump Kemp.

Well, this is a small detail but it wasn’t the act of dumping Kemp that got them below I don’t think. The trade itself did. Kemp will still be on their books unless they find a trade before dumping him.

Cubs are talking to Darvish. Seems as though they're not done with pitching. Adds to the argument that we need to be ready to take the division in 2020, not now.

I agree but let me play devil's advocate. Quite a bit can happen between now and end of the season (injuries, regression, asteroids).

I actually really hope the Cubs sign Darvish to a long term deal(5years or more). He has a bunch of innings on his arm and has been caught tipping pitches multiple times. I don't think he'll be that good for more than a year or two.

Agree. I do think it would be foolish to make trades for shorter-term control guys to compete with them this year. If we want to sign some free agents (be very careful), sure.

I think if the Cubs make a splash that we have to give one more year to judge where everyone is at. Not saying we couldn't hang with the Cubs anyways, but I'm not dumping 4-5 key prospects to get Chris Archer and JT Realmuto and miss the playoffs by 7 games.

I agree with the general premise that the Brewers shouldn't get crazy with dealing away prospects this winter. But that's more for the general health of the Brewers organization than worrying about the Cubs. The cold reality of the Cubs situation is they have a **** ton of money to spend year after year and a smart GM so who the hell knows when those **** are going to be bad again. The Brewers need to focus on putting together the best long term team possible without worrying about other teams.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Yeah, that's a better way to put it. I guess my comment was addressing the ideas of trading for Archer, Duffy, Merrifield, Yelich, etc.

Yeah, sure. Most of those guys have 3-4 years of control. But whatever it is, subtract 1 year from the team control because it would likely take acquiring 5 of those guys to take down the Cubs this year unless basically every part of last year wasn't a mirage. It just isn't worth the cost right now.

If they wanna splurge on a free agent, it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I'm OK with that still.

Longoria to the Giants. I totally understand the luxury tax constraints but with teams getting smarter and realizing they need to tank, the league is going to have 7 or 8 juggernauts and everyone else trying to rebuild.

Dan Le Batard went hard at Rob Manfred on his show today.

Not only did he call Manfred him out on a lie to begin the show, the Miami Herald reported a few hours later that Manfred was indeed lying about whether he knew about Jeter's plan to slash payroll.

Manfred comes off as a weasel in his way of trying to parse his answers, and you can tell DLB was having none of it.

I don't know what to think. Clearly Jeter's group is a dick and they maybe shouldn't sold to them...and YES trading away marketable franchise players for nothing is not fun, but...it's going to help the team in the long run.
