2018 Brewers Transactions: Acquire Cedeno, Gio, Granderson

Need a place to discuss trade rumors and transactions that don't warrant a separate thread.

This from ESPN's "Trades We'd Like To See Before Opening Day:"

1. Milwaukee Brewers trade OF Domingo Santana to the San Francisco Giants for RHP Jeff Samardzija

The Giants' active winter should have one more big move. After bringing in a couple of older stars in Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen, the team should try to get younger by trading for the 25-year-old Santana. Hunter Pence's contract ends after this season, and Santana -- whose bat was 25 percent above average in his breakout 2017 season -- would provide a meaningful upgrade now and into the future. The Giants could then sign Alex Cobb at an annual salary below Samardzija's $18 million, helping them stay below the competitive balance tax this season.

For Milwaukee, removing Santana leaves a still-loaded outfield consisting of Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain and Ryan Braun. Jeff Samardzija has three years and $54 million remaining on his contract, but the Brewers have been involved in the free-agent market for pitching and could absorb Samardzija's salary. His Fielding Independent Pitching last year was 3.61, and his strikeout to walk rate was behind only Clayton Kershaw's in the NL, so he should improve on last season's 4.42 ERA.

What is the story with Dan Jennings? Did we sign him and most likely a 1B is going to go?

I don't know who Craig Edwards is, I just know he's a dipshit.

Yes, he's signed. Probably at a very reasonable amount as he was given partial salary when released. As to who is released or sent down for the Crew, we don't know yet.

If Stearns can work out a good package of prospects it actually makes a lot of sense, which is why they have been dancing around a deal for a while. It would be 100% about the prospects, Kemp is irrelevant other than Mark A. being ok with wasting extra payroll on him. I do think casual fans and some not so casual fans would freak out about moving Braun, especially given the timing after last night. Yeah, it would be a bummer on an emotional level, kind of like the Brewers version of a Jordy Nelson type of thing.

It would be surprising to me because we'd be acquiring another OF, and still be stuck with 4 guys for three spots, after spending spring training teaching Braun how to play 1B. The prospects and salary relief must be a nice selling point to justify that kinda move.

Yeah, at this point I’d much rather see how Braun works at first instead of making a move like this, unless the prospect haul is impressive.

Unless LAD called last night and blew us away, I doubt something like this would happen. Put in too much work moving him to 1st and it still leaves our OF in a weird spot.

The writer who tweeted that is a complete and utter hack. He's a throw **** against the wall guy.

Duarte has been quiet on Braun since that rumor he posted went out there. Does not help his credibility.

I'm a "try to understand the intent" type of guy with most rumors. The "why the hell would we be looking at Cain with all the OF depth" type of questions, you put 2 and 2 together and saw something brewing and a use for Cain with potential trades/shifts from the OF (they fell short on trading Santana for now, but we know why they went after Cain, of course).

With the Braun/Kemp stuff, I kinda got the idea. Shorter contract on Kemp and maybe prospects will make it worth your while.

That said, my new conspiracy theory is that this is something developed by both the Brewers and Dodgers to increase leverage in other trades. The Brewers are shopping around Santana with the idea that "we don't have to trade him because we have stuff in the works for Braun and that would settle our OF surplus since we'd probably cut Kemp or put him in a reserve role."

It obviously could also just be some dude trying to throw **** against the wall and gain traction. The only reason I can somewhat believe it is because the Braun/LA rumors have had some legs and have been around for a few years...but it does feel less and less likely and this one could very likely just be trash.

The tweet I saw yesterday was that one of the "prospects" April fools day'd" his agent and thats where the leak came from.

Yasmany Thomas waived. Wouldn be an interesting MiLB offer.
