As much as i love the draft we have so many guys we can trade for young prospects at any time...also the last couple years we have really spent on International Free Agents and gotten a couple top 30 International FA's these last 3 or 4 years...System is so deep with young guys were going with 2 rookie club teams this year

that being said now we're without our 1A and 3rd round pick..with picking so late in the 1st id have to think we will have least amount of bonus pool money in the draft

Hes gotta really be betting on himself this year if he turned down 15m a year for the next 4 years to make 3.25m more one year.....If he has a crap year who knows what he's worth next year

If that's true that's less of "betting on yourself" and more of "fire your agent" territory.

Right.. who knows maybe his agent suggested taking the 4 year deal and he thought he was worth more..his call in the end

This is like when the Indians signed Jack Parkman.

ESPN is reporting that the Brewers "stretched beyond their planned budget" to sign Grandal.

I'm guessing that we won't see any other significant FA signings this offseason.

Eh, I guess. All the baseball people seem to love it for the Crew. So Grandal catches four days a week and Pina two? Grandal plays against righties, Pina against lefties? I know I saw him at his worst version during the NLCS, and I'm all about upgrading the roster at any time, but it seems like we could spend that money elsewhere. Yeah, I know its only one year. Obviously don't love it but...

We can always use more pitching but otherwise 2B for 2 months and catcher are the only places needed to spend at.

Casuals are pissed at this deal. woke up to about thirty posts saying how this deal ruined their day because they saw grandal play a total of 7 times last year and he sucked. LOL. seems like a lot of money and I bashed Mark A for always talking budget, but i like it. Catcher/2nd are the biggest holes. The next biggest is an Ace, but you're not going to get an ace for 18 mil unless you trade the farm, which they won't do.

I think Pina probably is back but I wouldn't say it's a sure thing. They could flip him for a prospect and roll Katz with Nottingham in AAA as the fall back plan. I don't think they paid him 18 mil to not catch as much as physically possible and he's a guy who's been pretty durable.

I do think this move lessens the need to go get a 2nd baseman. With Grandal's bat in the top 6 in the order they are probably more comfortable not having a great bat at 2nd. I think they could still sign someone if they can get them on a nice 1 year deal but if nothing materializes they could probably ride the first month or two out with some combo of Perez, Spangenberg, Saladino until Huira gets there.

Yup. And I've been all about upgrading that position. I think it'll just take awhile for me to get those images of the NLCS out of my brain. The Dodgers had to go with their backup because Grandal had the yips. I know his overall body of work is much, much better. And being a free agent, he'll be motivated.

I read he was #1 in defensive runs saved last year for pitch framing, so that's not the entire picture.

I know I bitched about Mark A being cheap a few pages ago but if it's true they are looking for a 2nd baseman as well, i won't bitch anymore :-) . I don't expect the brewers to have the highest payroll or even top 10 in MLB but if they are a few players away and can get around 100-105 mil, then won't ever complain again. I will gladly take my statement back about Mark A being cheap!
