Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the nod for Los Angeles after an impressive showing in Game 1 of the NLDS. Starting in place of Clayton Kershaw, Ryu held the Atlanta Braves to four hits -- allowing only one runner to get bast first base -- while striking out eight in seven shutout innings.

Ryu has only allowed one run in his last 26 innings and will face Milwaukee for just the second time in his career. The last meeting came more than five years ago when he held the Brewers to two runs in 7 1/3 innings of a 9-2 Dodgers victory on May 22, 2013.

I'm ready, glad I have my nephew's 2nd birthday party from 10-2 today, something to keep me distracted and occupied until first pitch.

With the home field advantage, gotta win this game. Go Brewers!

A little surprised to see Moose and Shaw back to back in the starting lineup but other than that as expected. Is there something that shows lefties do ok against Ryu?

We knew Kratz would start so it's basically Shaw for Perez. Somewhat surprised Moose and Shaw are back to back

Ryu does have some pretty strange reverse splits both this year and for his career. Stacking Moose and Shaw makes more sense knowing that.

Can't get over how dumb the 2-3-2 format is. How does it make any sense that if the road team can split the first two games they get to be completely in the drivers seat?

I don't know that ameliorates Shaw's issues against lefties however. We'll find out, but if Schoop were halfway decent since coming over, and didn't have atrocious numbers against the Dodgers to boot, pretty sure we'd see him instead and a left-right complement. He's the gift that keeps on giving. I wonder if the Brewers even pick up his option at this point or cut their losses.

I feel like Counsell is on the verge of revolutuonizing the game. Time is a flat circle - the 3rd and 4th innings are just as important as the 8th and 9th. Throw your closer out there in the 5th. Hell, start Hader. Putting together as many scoreless innings out of 9 is all that matters.

It's not a long term solution. There is a difference between revolutionizing and survival. If we had starting pitching he trusted, you can bet he'd use them

Yeah, it's not like the Brewers didn't go after starting pitching in free agency and before the deadline. They just didn't get it at the price they were willing to pay so they adapted. It's a byproduct of necessity, knowing the strength and weaknesses of your team, and the directive probably came down from the top. Craig is in charge of execution. We had misfits the likes of Brent Suter as a starter so he's not going to go 6-7 innings or he's going to get shelled and the team is going to have no chance to win. A lot of the pen arms were outstanding and it housed a lot of pseudo starters who were in that role before, will return, or could. So it's like a series of 8 mini starters, some to back the others up, putting up better numbers the first time thru an order, and a couple classic relievers to close it out. I'm sure if Verlander and Keuchel walked thru that door the Brewers would gladly ride them.

The way they are playing it is in part being driven by the circumstances of their roster especially the fact they have young starters who are able to get the job done as long relievers.

But there are some trends that will continue past this year. Like not exposing any starters to too many turns through the order. The Brewers have embraced this but they aren't the only team. Heck even with a chacin who's been an above average starter they don't stretch him to far. I could also see their tandem starter approach being copied in the playoffs in future years as teams see the benefit of using 2 guys on shorter stints instead of one average guy on a longer turn.

I also think from a team building perspective when you're limited in payroll trying to have a bunch of young cheap arms that you can mix and match makes more sense than blowing your payroll on high priced starters and neglecting your lineup. Now this takes good scouting and development to keep the stream of guys coming.
