2019 Brewers Offseason Thread - Phelps Signed

Post#1 » by humanrefutation » Wed Oct 2, 2019 3:45 am

We've got some decisions on Grandal and Moose. Grandal is probably declining his mutual option, as I'm sure Moose will as well.

Thames has a 7.5m club option.
Anderson has an 8.5m club option.
Lyles, Gio, Pomeranz, and Albers are all UFAs.

I want Grandal re-signed and then I want us to sign Cole, Strasburg, Rendon and trade Arcia for Ketel Marte.

Interesting off season. With yelich, hiura, Cain, braun, moose, grandal (if options are picked up) they have a solid core. Woodruff is the only top tier (#2) pitcher they have. It's a 81 win team.

I'm not sure but the rule changes for relievers goes into effect next year, right? And September call ups change? The past few years Stearns and counsel built and managed for Sept and took advantage. Will be. Harder now for small markets to capitalize.

I'm hoping they find some diamonds in the rough ala Miley last year.

Grandal is almost a must have behind the plate. Can't trot many Pina out there every day.

Grandal and Moose have mutual options. Both will decline and become UFA.

September will be limited to 28. Regular season rosters go up to 26.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

No real point in even trying to guess what Stearns has up his sleeve. I'd definitely bring Thames back. Anderson would be dependent on the rest of the rotation. The two mutual option guys would be great to bring back as well if possible.

I'm fine with letting Thames and Anderson (along with Pina) walk if that's what it takes to be able to bring back Yaz and Moose. Move Braun to 1B full time and bring in a lefty bat (e.g. Neal Walker) to platoon there.

Let Hernan, Shaw and Albers walk.

I'd love to upgrade SS, but not sure how. Maybe give Spangenberg a run at it full time?

Try to bring back Lyles and Pom at a reasonable price. They were both garbage before coming to MKE, so I can't imagine they'd cost too much.

If there’s a choice between grandall and moose it’s grandall 100000%.

Thats a high percentage. Who would replace Moose at 3rd?

I like them both. Grandal maybe a little more important considering he plays catcher, but a good 3B is also valuable. What I'm trying to say is, Moose is important to the team too.

Gonna need Mark A to open up his wallet no doubt.

Not a very bold prediction but I think Stearns does something bold to try help push us over the top.

I don't think Grandal will be back. He was available last offseason in part because of his terrible playoff run. He also turned down a 4 year/$60m contract offer from the Mets last offseason, so I'm thinking he's going to look for more than that this offseason. I think we'll get priced out on him.

I can see Moose returning only because of his affinity for Milwaukee, but we might get priced out on him, too.

I could see us reuniting with Wade Miley.

Thames is a no-brainer. His contract is reasonable in a vacuum, and with no 1B ready to get promoted (Braun isn't more than a platoon option at 1B, and that's stretching it as he doesn't seem to enjoy playing the position).

Shaw has an option left. No reason to cut him loose unless they know the underlying cause for his suckitude this season & know it won't get better.
Spangenberg has played a total of 23 innings at SS and 21 of them were this season. He should be no one's starter.

Can't see grandall returning, someone will give him a contract the Brewers won't/shouldn't touch. Good player but paying an aging C on a long-term deal is dicey.

Moose I could see back. Hard to see his market for a long term deal be much better than it's been the past two years so I could see him agree to a 1 or 2 year deal to return.

Bring back Mike Fiers because he's apparently the luckiest SOB on the planet.

https://www.mlb.com/news/2020-mlb-free-agents-by-position

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/contracts/

- We get outbid for Grandal
- I'm ok with Pina playing part-time at C, but who from the list of FAs do we go after? It just doesn't look good.
- Need to find 2 starters in FA, we can't have nice things, the players that stuck out to me in the list are below.
Wade Miley
Jake Odorizzi
Zack Wheeler
- Sign Moose, Pomeranz, Thames, Chase
- Keeping Pomeranz is important to the BP, hope Burnes/Peralta take steps forward, keep Suter in the BP, and I like the group of RPs with Knebel coming back
- Won't be resigned: Lyles, Gio, Albers, Ray Black

Here are my attempt at putting a roster together (Some of course won't be on the MLB 26? man roster):
C - Pina, ???, Nottingham
1B - Thames
2B - Hiura/Spangenberg
3B - Moose, Shaw
SS - Arcia
OF - Braun, Gamel, Cain, Grisham, Yelich
Utility: Perez, Saladino

SP:
Woodruff
Houser
Chase - Buyout and sign cheaper?
Zach Davies
Sign 1-2 Starters

RP
Hader
Knebel
Sign Drew Pomeranz
Suter
Guerra
Peralta
Bobby Wahl
Taylor Williams
Corbin Burnes
Faria
Jimmy Nelson
Jay Jackson
