He played one shortened season and got that deal. He'd be under control for 6 years for peanuts right? So basically bypassed those years and got 340 mil. Great deal by both parties.

They get him through his prime and are betting that he'd cost $500M+ to extend in a few years. $24M a year will be peanuts for him if he plays out his contract based on his projected development.

It's a big bet on someone that young, though.

The crazy thing is he wasn't even considered a can't miss prospect early on. White Sox had him and he was a trade throw-in.

That said I think it's a great deal for both sides. Kid gets absurd money and security, the Pads get him below market value if TV deals go nuts and/or he's a perennial Trout kind of talent.
