Brewers' Hall out indefinitely with severe ankle injury
By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer
July 5, 2007
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Brewers center fielder Bill Hall badly sprained his right ankle while leaping to try to catch Ryan Doumit's solo home run for Pittsburgh in the second inning Thursday and will be out indefinitely.
The injury to one of its top players could be a major setback to division-leading Milwaukee, which has lost five of seven and was beaten in three of four in Pittsburgh. Hall has a high ankle sprain, the more severe form of the injury and one that can sideline a football player for a month.
"I hope it doesn't take that long," Hall said.
The Brewers aren't estimating how long their 2006 team MVP will be out, but it will be until after the All-Star break. Hall returned to Milwaukee to see his own doctors and did not accompany the Brewers to their weekend series in Washington.
No fractures were revealed in X-rays taken in Pittsburgh, but Hall will undergo additional tests, including an MRI exam, in Milwaukee.
"I'll have to wait and see how much swelling there is," Hall said. "Hopefully I'm a quick healer."
Hall is hitting .272 with nine homers and 38 RBIs while usually hitting fourth or fifth in Milwaukee's order. His 288 at-bats are the third most on the club.
Hall's own athletic ability may have contributed to the injury. As he went back on the play, he used the center field wall's padding as a springboard to boost himself and get closer to Doumit's drive.
"I saw where the ball was," he said. "I took a swipe with my glove and got pretty close to it, actually."
That extra push caused him to get higher than he expected and, when he didn't land when he anticipated he would, he came down hard on the ankle.
"I didn't realize how high I was and I was prepared to land quicker than I did," said Hall, who returned to the lineup after being given a planned day off Wednesday. "When I didn't, the ground kind of snuck up on me."
Hall lay on the warning track while trainers and teammates gathered around him, finally limping off the field under assistance several minutes later.
With Hall out, Kevin Mench and Gabe Gross are expected to get more at-bats. Manager Ned Yost, who won't have the lineup flexibility he had before, was terse when discussing Hall's injury -- no doubt unhappy that it accompanied a 6-3 loss to the Pirates.
"We'll know more (Friday)," Yost said. "Nothing is broken. That's the extent we know right now."
Terrible news. You have to imagine Billy will be going on the DL for an extended period of time. I think we all can assume that Gwynn will get recalled from Nashville.
The only question I have is...does Hart now become our everyday center fielder with Mench/Gwynn spliting time in right? I think this makes the most sense. I don't want to see Gross anymore than I have to see him now.
This also means that Estrada will be back in the five hole and it'll be interesting to see how Yost juggles the lineup out.

Christ it was like Redd going up for that meaningless dunk that he got hurt on. Hall had no chance at catching that ball and there was no reason for him to climb the fence.

My nightmare is Hall goes to the DL and they call up Nix.

Why me? It wouldn't be my decision to call him up. I'm just saying it's my nightmare because Melvin for some unknown reason loves Nix.

Nix might be the biggest feast or famine guy I've ever seen. At least from the time I've seen him. Home run or bust, he's worse than Russel Branyan. If Melvin brings him up then I might have to question his intelligence.
I would have to E-punch you because you brought the idea of Nix up. If Melvin reads these boards he could be calling triple a Nashville as we speak.

Why wouldn't they recall ton Gwynn Jr? He plays good defense and he can hit the ball and he was just up.

I'm hearing it will be Gwynn. I'm also hearing Melvin is working the phones for a starter.

It will be interesting to see what Melvin does. A proven starter won't be cheap. We'd have to give up some young talent. But Bush/Vargas/Suppan/Cappy are not getting the job done.

I can see Will Inman being traded.

I have no problems with Gwynn getting the call up (provided he has options? I don't know that situation). Right now you have a lot of guys swinging for the fences. A guy that simply wants to get on base might be what this team needs.

That was my reasoning why he should have stayed up and gross should have been sent down, but I guess it really doesn't matter now.

very interesting we're looking at a starter. though i shouldn't be too surprised. we've got the pieces to make a great offer, but who's there that we would want, or could keep? who's available, d-train, buehrle, who else?

I don't know, I find it really hard to fault a guy for making an effort and playing hard like Billy does every day out there in centerfield. He said he saw where the ball was and got close to it, so, a hell of an effort and unfortunate ending. It's baseball though, s*** happens sometimes.

Gwynn hasn't been tearing up Nashville, hitting .258, only 1-3 on stolen bases.

gwynn called up
Washington -- Centerfielder Bill Hall was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a high right ankle sprain today, and the Milwaukee Brewers have recalled Tony Gwynn from their Class AAA Nashville farm team to take his spot.

This would be the perfect time for Melvin to call up Ken Williams and put together a package for Jermaine Dye. When Hall comes back then we have Hart in LF, Hall in CF, and Dye in RF. It would take a loaded package prolly one that involved 2 of our main prospects, but I think Dye would put us over the top. Inman/another good prospect/Gwynn/Bush or Varggas could hopefully get it done.
Thoughts on Dye guys?

He sucks. I'd rather have Jenkins start everyday.
