Why is it that this team can not find a way to play 9 consistent innings of baseball on the road. To me it seems like they either jump out of the gates for the first few innings or just the first in some cases. And then just completely go stale and allow teams to get right back in it. Does anyone know why this is and why this team is a complete 180 from home games to road games?

Inexperience, and a lot of it.

The team has been in a bad funk for close to a month and the biggest culprits in the losing have been the vets,way more than the young guys besides mainly Weeks.

Jenkins=has seen his numbers go down each month
Mench=hit some singles lately,but overall he's a crappy player
Estrada=got some hits today,but overall has been a liability for awhile
Hall=was hurt,but even when healthy,is having a very mediocre year

Suppan=vet brought in for experience/poise,has been a trainwreck
Capuano=had some nice starts lately,but was miserable before that
Turnbow=just can't trust him
Cordero=a disaster on the road the last 2 months
Sheets=hurt again

The only reason the Brewers haven't melted down to where their season is already over is the play of their younger guys,the unexperienced ones.

I'm not worried that the Brewers won't finish well because of inexperience.I'm worried because the guys who do have experience aren't carrying their weight.Those guys for the most part are doing most of the choking and asking the kids to carry the team on their back.

Sans Suppan none of those guys have real experience on winning teams. I think when people say experience they mean it as experience in winning, not how many years you have been in the league for.

Yeah, I should have said playoff experience. We have basically none of it.

How has Suppan been a trainwreck? He is what he is. He has always been a rollercoaster in his seasons with St. Louis. The only reason he got his contract was his lights out performance in the playoffs last year. He'll end up with about a 4.50 ERA, which is normal. He'll give you solid outings if you make the playoffs. He's not a 1, he's not a stopper. He's a 3/4 caliber pitcher, nothing else.

And that's a problem. We're going to be paying an average of $10.5 million for a 3/4 starting pitcher that can't get past 5 innings.

Yes, but this is classic Suppan. Once you lose confidence in him. He'll bust out 10 starts in a row with a 2.7 era with a 6-2 record. He'll be fine, the Brewers will be fine.

Well he better start soon because he only has 11 starts left this season. To be honest signing Suppan was a waste of resources, he's not worth what we're paying him and he's not even one of our top 5 starters right now.

Good background to hear from a Cardinals fan.....

Unfortunately the Suppan signing is part of the price of admission to field a competitive MLB team IMO. You've got to have a couple $10mm a year pitchers who may essentially just eat innings and every third year or so go 15-11. The other year they suck and the other year of the cycle they may spend on the DL.

It's why I pretty much stopped following MLB about 15-years ago when I realize the Brewers couldn't afford to have a bunch of Dan Gadzuric's and Bobby Simmons on their team....but you need a few of those guys to help you win given the long MLB season.

I have no doubt Sup will run off a 4-2 streak maybe in September to help us....I just hope we are still in it at that point.

I know he's not a stopper or anything close to that,i never implied he was.With that said,i highly doubt the team expected him to pitch as bad as he has for nearly three months.Suppan hasn't been pitching like a 3/4 starter,he's pitching like some scrub you would pick up for free after being DFA.

As for the only reason he got that contract being a few good playoff starts,Suppan posted these ERA's the last three years

He was a pretty good starter all three years,Suppan didn't just have a few nice starts in the playoffs.Let's hope you are right and he gets his act together and starts pitching like the guy Melvin wanted when he signed Suppan,a solid 3/4 pitcher instead of a guy who would be booted from the rotation his he didn't have a big contract.
