What's needed in 2008 for first .500+ season in 15 years?
....and no this isn't in reaction to the loss today. It's something I've been telling friends for 2 weeks now. This season is a loss, and I think we are a lock for less than 80 wins. Reasons: amount of road games, pitching staff is lost, and we can't score without HRs. Add to that our youth and lack of leadership and I say let's hope for third place.
I think we need guys on this team who understand and can execute fundamental baseball. I'd love to see more guys on this team who can lay down bunts or sacrifice runners. I think CF, LF, 2B are all upgradable in these areas. I think our guys like Prince and Ryan will learn that a single with a guy on 2nd in the 7th inning on is as important as a solo home run in the 1st inning.....at least I hope.
Pitching right now is a mess. Pre-season I thought it was a strength but not any more. Sheets will be fine, and I think Yovanni and Manny will be good 4-5 starters next year. Who else is on the staff? We can assume Suppan will be around but we need another strong starter IMO.
Bullpen is a concern given contract situations with Coco and Linebrink. One has to stay for sure.
Leadership...if we can't find players to lead then our manager has to lead. Yost has proven to lose this team again..time for a new voice.
I hope I'm wrong and this year we can succeed. Right now I see nothing left with this team and any Brewer fan who thinks this is a playoff team right now is kidding themselves. It's a shame they ruined the magic they began with early this year. We can only hope the division sucks again next year like it did the past two years.

Torii Hunter is NOT good. Our main problem is getting on base. So how is a guy with a .341 OBP in a contract year and a .325 OBP in his career going to help that?
Again bash if you must but Gross in a platoon would be great. The guy draws walks. Batting him 2nd in front of Prince and Braun would be great.
We're not going to upgrade 2nd base. Weeks will be there for at least another year. Some of you guys forgot how valuable he was in 2006.
Pitching would be great for an upgrade. Unfortunately we're still stuck with Suppan. I'd like to try to extend Sheets 4 years $60 million. I hope one of Linebrink or Cordero is re-signed.
But all we need to do is get one or two more OBP guys to hit at the top and improve the pitching whether it is in the bullpen or the starting rotation (preferably starting rotation.)

I just think that Tori Hunter's veteran leadership, playoff experience and star quality would do a lot for this team. Maybe not though. This team really needs a real lead off hitter. No more, "Not prototypical" lead off hitters. We need a real one with a high OBP and one that bats at or around .300. I have no idea where we will find that guy though.
