Villanueva being sent down to TripleA ?

I only caught the tail end of them mentioning this on the WSSP PostGame show, but they mentioned that Villanueva is being sent down to TripleA temporarily and Seth McClung is being brought up. Something about wanting to "stretch Villanueva out" or something.
But Yost also mentioned something about Villanueva not coming back as a starter, but remaining a one inning guy for the 7th inning or 8th inning.
Is Villanueva going to be put into the starting rotation leaving Parra (and Capuano) in the bullpen? I don't understand why we don't just give Parra some starts...
Can someone please clear all this up for me?
I am confused...

Why would they do that? That sounds pretty stupid to me, especially after Villanueva's great outting today.

the only reference i've ever heard to stretching someone out is to prepare them to start. my guess is that he finally gets his chance to start when the 5 spot comes up again, and he has from now till then to "stretch out".

Yost wants him to get himself right so that he can be the 6th and 7th inning guy again and he also wants to get a look at McClung, who's been on fire in AAA since we acquired him for Ball-four.

CV will be stretching himself out down in AAA.

It brings another fresh arm up. CV just pitched 3 innings, he won't be able to go again for a couple of days. McClung hasn't pitched since Friday. It's a way of keeping a full pen. They may do more of this juggling in the next 10 days until the roster is expanded.

Thanks for the info.
What kind of limits are there on how often you can do something like that?

Depends on how many options a player has. I think he has two left (now one).
Most likely we will see Gallardo in the pen in September, with Parra being "shut down" to rest, when he is recalled for September 1 roster expansion, and hopefully a playoff roster.

Yeah they have to be careful not to use up anyones options but right now it's all about trying to win. If a picher can't be used for a couple of days and has options, ship him out. We only have to do this for the next 10 days.

Anyone know how many options a player gets per year?

not unless Cappy suddenly rediscovers an ability to actually pitch effectively far more than 4 innings. so long as we're still in the pennant race and gallardo's recent outings (last night notwithstanding) remain a thing of the past, I'd be SHOCKED if he's moved out of the lineup. I know they don't want to tax his arm, but we really don't have any options. They're more likely to shut down someone like Parra (again, also unlikely) than put Gallardo in the pen, IMO. Still, neither of those things will happen unless we're out of the race (in which case I'd applaud the move), or Cappy, McClung et al. can effectively replace Gallardo/Parra.

It depends.
Players on the 40 man roster can get optioned unlimited times, I believe, until he is on the roster for 3 years.

In the middle of a race to make the playoffs? He is the second best starter on this team.

He won't be if he blows his arm out. Same with Parra.

They have been keeping his pitch count low. He has had 67 IP this year.
I think he will be ok in september. He has never pitched more then 6 innings.

Prior had 116 IP his rookies year. PLus whatever he had in the minors
Gallardo has 67, so far. PLus whatever he had in the minors
Prior then went to 212 . When he was 22. He is a power pitcher. Gallardo isnt a power pitcher.
If the brewers limit his pitch count like they have been doing I dont think there will be any problem at all.

He's actually at 145 innings this year. Of course his limit should be about 175 innings so maybe one more start, then Sheets comes back and he goes to the bullpen and then if we make the playoffs he can start a few games.
