Who would you add next year

Post#1 » by Luv those Knicks » Mon Sep 7, 2009 4:13 am

Keep in mind, reports are that the mets might spend less next year than this year, so that limits the spending somewhat.

As the team stands now:

C: Santos / Thole(?)
1B: Murphy
2B: Castillo
3B: Wright
SS: Reyes
RF: Francoeur
CF: Beltran
LF: Pagan

Rotation:

Santana
Pelfrey
Maine (health may be a question)
Ollie
Niese (?)

I think you have to add a legit starter. That almost goes without saying, but I'm torn whether to add a first baseman or an outfielder. Pagan looks OK out there and Murphy's been better over the last 2 months.

well mets aren't gonna spend at all, they're gonna lower the payroll so don't expect anything big.

imo i'd make murphy the starter next year and when ike davis is ready, you call him up.

and for those who are too lazy, davis is a 6'5" 1b who was drafted last year and this year had a great season hitting .298 with 31 doubles, 20 homeruns, and 71 rbi's.

he's also a great defensive 1b.
LOL Y U MAD THO?

Cut payroll and not spend at all are not necessarily the same things.

But, at the same time, it's possible that the team would be content with pencilling in Murphy and Pagan as starters. I think, you have to figure that Reyes/Castillo's health are not guaranteed healthy, so they'll need to pay for a backup middle infielder, like they did with Cora last year. They may have overpaid for Cora, but when he was healthy, he wasn't bad. He was also a good lockerroom guy.

The obvious fits are Jason Bay or Holliday, but I don't know if the mets would pay that much, so they could get a cheaper option, which, in this market, shouldn't be too hard to do.

I also think they have to add a starting pitcher, but what they spend is, ofcourse, a question.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=nym

Salaries gone:

Delgado: 12 M
Wagner: 10 (?)
Putz: 6
Schneider 4.9

That's 33 million in those 3 players right there.

Yes, I know that Wright, Reyes, others will get a pay increase, so it's not that simple.

it's a tough call on what Wilpon will spend. If he's going to spend 33 million, you try to get an elite player, but if he's going to cut payrole and spend, 15 million? 10 million? It's going to be a disapointing off season.

One thing I don't believe is that he'll spend nothing. He's going to add something to this team, probably a solid bench player at the middle infield to spell Castillo and keep him rested. Perhaps a catcher cause I'm not sure anybody thinks Thole is ready for the majors. And probably a starting pitcher and a cheap reliever or two. As disapointing as this year was, I think the mets have to consider making a playoff run next year. There's still some nice talent on this team.

This team needs another starter. But I have been crying for a consistent bat with pop for awhile. I would have liked it to be a 1st baseman (didnt want delgado back) or a corner outfielder. But theres not going to be much money added here looks like. And that type of player does not come cheap.

Im so down on this team and the game in general. I have not caught a game in some time and im just waiting for the knicks at this point. Its even difficult to judge what spots to work on next season because of injuries.

I think the wilpons situation could make 1 or both of these happen.

#1 Let guys who's contracts are up walk and get cheap solid fillers for now
#2 Trade the larger contracted veterans away for farm system packages

#2 would be nice but then I have to question our players value because of injuries. I dont know fellas, rough times for the orange and blue.

^Yup, a consistent bat with pop. Even more specifically, a 'clutch' bat. Our guys always come up short in crunchtime. I expect Omar to add to the one glaring need, but fall short in other areas, like he has in the past few seasons. His head should absolutely be on the chopping block next season... I'm very disappointed he's not getting more heat right now.

Maybe our cries have been heard.
Sports Illustrated - The Mets are expected to look at Matt Holliday this winter as they attempt to reverse their recent futures.

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated wrote on Friday that New York will be looking for power and Holliday and Jason Bay could be prime options.

Also, the Mets could be one of the teams interested in Adrian Gonzalez if the Padres ultimately decide to shop him.

Milton 'Wacko' Bradley, anyone? The Cubs almost have to pick up about 90% of his deal, if they want to trade him. Too combustible even for our sorry team? Sheff wore out his welcome mat pretty quick...

Sure enough, here's a Jon Heyman suggestion: Ollie for Milton Bradley. Of course, the Cubbies need assume most of Bradley's deal. Low risk, since we're going to shed Ollie's albatross deal as well.

Franceour supposedly said Jason Marquis would love to come here. He'd make a good #3.

As per Wiretap, Mets prefer Holliday over Bay...

Mets Prefer Holliday Over Bay
7th October, 2009 - 11:07 pm
SI.com - After their disastrous 2009 campaign, the Mets figure to be aggressive players in free agency.

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets prefer Matt Holliday for left field over Jason Bay.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said they expect to spend money this winter.

Our ballpark size might hurt our chances with offensive FA's, however. As per Wiretap...

Holliday Might Prefer Avoiding Citi Field
14th October, 2009 - 8:22 am
MLB.com - The Mets would love to add a big bat this winter, but guys like Matt Holliday might look to avoid Citi Field.

Marty Noble pointed out on MLB.com that the ball park's size could make free agents think twice about any offer from the Mets.

I would look into some cheap options offensivly and look to pay a pitcher or 2....

What I would do with the money...

Look into cheap options offensivly and spend to get a pitcher like Lackey...

Offensivly:

1st base: Aubrey Huff, Chad Tracy
2nd base: David Eckstein, Akinori Iwamura
Utility: Bobby Crosby
Outfielders: Rick Ankiel, Carl Crawford, Randy Winn
Starting Pitchers: Erik Bedard, John Lackey, Kevin Millwood
Relievers: Chad Bradford(he was awesome for us)
Move Randle and we are chip ready !
