Question about expanded rosters?

Post#1 » by Luv those Knicks » Sun Sep 2, 2007 3:59 pm

Since teams can have up to 40 players on the roster, can you use all 40 in a game, or is the GM limited to 25 players per each individual game?

There's a lot of strategy that goes into the 25 man roster, I'm just curious if anyone knows how that works.

Thanks.

Each Major League Baseball team maintains both a 25-man roster and a 40-man roster of players. Players on the 25-man roster are eligible to play in official major league games throughout the season. The 40-man roster includes the players on the 25-man roster plus as many as 15 other players who are either on the team's 15-day disabled list (see below) or who are in the team's minor league system. From September 1 through the end of the regular season, any player on the 40-man roster (also referred to as the "expanded roster") is eligible to play in an official regular season game. Players must be on a team's 40-man roster as of September 1 to be eligible for post-season play.

So essentially you can use only the 25 players in a game, but the other 40 can be used once you reach the playoffs.

actually, as I read it:

it sounds like it's 40 players potentially availalble to play during the regular season games after Sept 1.

But playoff rosters are cut to 25 - that I know. Though, usually teams switch from 5 pitcher rotations to 4 pitcher rotations, which allows an extra position or bull pen player.

I believe you can use all of them if you want to.
