If we dont make the playoffs.. a perspective from a homer...
I've said this many times before on this board, at the end of the day the players need to perform... It doesnt matter who Willie calls up, whether or not he does it by the book or not, our guys have to perform. You cannot pin everything on Willie. I still have 1000000% confidence in him. Our pitching has been PUTRID the last 2 weeks, END of story. We don't have a dependable third option in the pen, and that is what is killing us. Look at last year when we were steam rolling everyone and games were already finished by the 7th inning every game because our bullpen was rock SOLID. Chad Bradford, Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano, Duaner Sanchez... when we had all 4 of these guys last year we were lights out because they were dependable arms.
Not resigning Bradford imo has been the biggest mistake under the Omar/Willie regime. Schoenweis hasn't been there when we needed him. Burgos has not seen the light of day in the majors and now he needs TJ surgery.
BUT, despite the mistake of not signing Bradford, Omar didn't exactly just sit down and think the bullpen was fine. No one could have foreseen the circus act that was Duaner Sanchez's injury parade during spring training. We thought Burgos could be a big flame throwing setup man for us- but he got hurt. Mota has been putrid in any and every spot. FOr every 2 good consecutive innings this guy pitches he has 5 that absolutely blow donkey nuts. Feliciano and Heilman have been great for us this year, think about it guys, if you are in the bullpen and you look left and see garbage, right and see sewage skills its not pretty. These guys KNOW that they are the only two reliable pre- Billy Wagner shows that we have.
Offensively, we have disappointed. Delgado has been disappointing, the Alou injury hurt us early in the year when we were slumping miserably.
To sum it up-
At this point, I don't really care if we get into the playoffs or not. I KNOW we are the best team in the NL east. Next year, we will undoubtedly kick ass and take names with no regrets if we blow this (at this point, I'm already accepting that we won't make it). Maine will have learned from his struggles in the 2nd half under his FIRST full MLB season. Perez has definitely shown that he has turned it around since being traded here. Pedro will be ready. I don't need to keep going on at this point...
As for Willie predicting we are going to win the division... Come ON guys. What do you want Willie to say? "Oh well, you know, we aren't playing well.. it doesn't look like we are gonna make it."
This IS Willie's job as a manager to come out and say these things, he has NO option BUT TO SAY WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT. As a manager, you take the fall for your team and players, and Willie is no exception. If we don't make the playoffs and Willie gets fired I will no longer be a Mets fan- MARK MY WORDS, this is how much faith I have in him in instilling the way baseball should be played, especially with the young type of team we have.

Everyone deserves blame, sure. But Willie deserves a lot of blame in this. In the last few weeks of the season, he was powerless to do anything. He kept acting nonchalant about things, almost like he was in denial. He needed to put his foot down and light a match under our butts. None of the players could do it. Willie should have started cracking some heads, if he had to. He just kept humming his played out tune. Someone needs to take the fall for this. It very likely will be Willie. And if you can't deal with that, I think the Yankees bandwagon needs more frontrunners...

Im so upset- I went to the game last night and tonight, its like people are seeing ghosts. The fans cant believe it, I still am in shock.
This is seriously the worst couple of weeks of my life. To see us being on the verge of turning the corner in Florida, to being swept by the Nationals and etc. its just so bad. To make it all worse, I hate Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies.
But you know what- they will choke and I know we are going to win this division and be in the playoffs. See you guys Monday, when we will be favored to win the championship. (Heard it here first!!!)

that says a lot more about "professional" athletes than it does about the coach. if the thought of choking away a 7 game lead didn't motivate them i don't know what willie could've done.
