8. Fernando Martinez - OF Mets - DOB: 10/10/88 - ETA: 2009
Previous rankings: mid-2006 #80, 2007 #10

.271/.336/.377, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 51/20 K/BB, 3 SB in 236 AB for Double-A Binghamton

Martinez is currently on the DL with a hand injury, but he's hitting at least as well as should have been expected after the Mets got ridiculously aggressive and pushed him up to Double-A to begin the season. Martinez batted .333/.389/.505 in 192 AB in low-A and .193/.254/.387 in 119 AB in high-A as a 17-year-old last year. The power is sure to come in time, and he already has a pretty good feel for hitting, rarely embarrassing himself on outside breaking balls. Martinez is likely to end up in right field and should be well above average there. He may not arrive as quickly as the Mets hope, but he'll likely be a .300 hitter with 25- or 30-home run ability in time.

8)

Deolis was also going to be ranked in the top 30 but he's been slowed down since his elbow tendinitis and every game since he's been dominant early and around the 4th/5th innings he starts to collapse. I would like to shut him down but the Mets know what they are doing. They have Deolis ranked in the 40s. 8)

Others are also on the list.

It's funny how they hold it against Tabata for being injured but not Fernando Martinez.

Fernando, if he had stayed a full season there instead of being promoted was on a Pace to BLOW AWAY Tabata's numbers.

Tabata isnt a better prospect then King Fernando!, just get over it.

Shut up? Who the hell are you to tell me to shut up? I'm trying to have a debate here and you insist on insulting me..

Instead of insulting me, why don't you actual have a legitimate debate with me. You calling me a homer is ridiculous. This is the same guy who hit .197 in the Florida State League, right? Have you looked at Tabata's stats in the FSL?

Yeah, I saw Martinez's stats in the South Atlantic League (not the Savannah Coast League, get your facts straight) and Tabata's are very similar. His stats in the SAL league are skewed by his 1-24 performance at the end of the year due to his wrist, when he was shut down. So basically, if you eliminate that 1-24 skid at the end of the year for Tabata, you have a similar sample size and they both hit around the same.

I think they are just about equal, Fernando only gets the edge because he was rushed to AA.

I disagree. Just because Martinez has been rushed doesn't mean he is a better prospect. Tabata has shown a better ability to hit for average and control the strikezone.

Martinez hasn't really done much to earn a promotion to Double A... it's just the Mets rushed him.

when people compare you to a young manny ramirez, im not sure if it gets any better.

but.. both of you are homers. stop arguing about prospects that have never seen the bigs. they are.. just..... prospects. not all of them turn into all stars- i dont care about how much lore and hype you build in. for every 1 good prospect a team churns out, there has to be 5-10 that fall flat on their face.

So why not just Eliminate all of Fernando's skids, I mean by then he'd be a 1.000 hitter.

Your making no sense. Your a homer, face it. I guess John Maine still sucks.

Damn, this hurts. I hate eating crow :-?

It's true though. I was skeptical after only 1 half, but he's been doing this for a full year now. Color me impressed.
