The Mets are close to acquiring second baseman Luis Castillo from the Twins for two minor leaguers, according to major-league sources.
Castillo would replace Jose Valentin, who recently suffered a season-ending broken shin when he fouled a pitch off his leg.
The Mets had been using Ruben Gotay and Damion Easley at second, but Castillo is a proven everyday player who helped the Marlins win the 2003 World Series.

Stupid idea IMO. Gotay hasbeen proving himself to be a clutch player. His defense is solid at best but the way he has been pounding the ball especially in clutch situations more then makes up for it. I guess Omar and Willie felt they needed a better denfesive 2B. Castillo is a good #2 hitter but I really like Gotay and he has produced given a chance. I hope we are trying to get one of those Twins BP arms in a deal also. I'd love to get Guerrier but I doubt Twins would want topart with him.

Maybe Omar thinks of Gotay strictly as a platoon guy? His career stats show he doesn't hit lefties very well. If the Mets didn't give up much, I don't think this is a bad deal at all.

I hate the fact that we will probably give up Mulvey. IMO too early to give up on a prospect we drafted just last year. W/e though, Castillo even though he isnt his old gold glove form is still an above average defensive 2B.
Mets need BP help.

Great move, Castillo is a proven veteran who hits at a .300 clip and has a good OBP. He also plays GG defense and is hard to strikeout. Good move by Omar.

NO MULVEY!

Mets Class AA catcher Drew Butera and Class A outfielder Dustin Martin are among the players the Twins are considering.
The deal is expected to be finalized after a review of the medical records of the players involved.

Great deal if you ask me. Castillo used to bat behind Juan Pierre so that wont effect Reyes base stealing. He has an above average glove, has a good average and is playoff ready. Nice Deal Omar !

Can't wait to see Reyes and Castillo turning double plays. Castillo batting behind Reyes is a great thing. It also improves out bench. Just wonder if Gotay might be moved for bullpen help or in a deal for a starter.

castillo's contract is up this year. so maybe castillo can serve as a tutor this year for gotay. and then the following yr if gotay proves to be ready defensively he'll start ther next year and the mets will take the 2nd round pick.
i doubt gotay's goin anywhere

I agree, Gotay is too good a hitter to give up on so fast. Castillo stabilizes the position, has WS experience, but I think Gotay can be the future.

And it's good Castillo is hard to strike out so they can put the hit and run a lot or make it much easier for Jose Reyes to steal more bases.

One thing this does for us is it makes our pinch hitting better. Gotay off the bench is pretty good. I remember last year's championship series, it was our hitting that abandoned us.
