Bannister / Burgos Trade (we took an L)
I knew we shouldn't have traded this guy...
Bannister (10-7) won for the fifth time in seven starts and lowered his ERA to 3.28, seventh-best in the American League. After giving up two runs, three hits and a walk in the first inning, the right-hander retired 18 of 21 batters. He is the first Royals rookie to win 10 games since Rusty Meachum in 1992.

Hindsight 20/20. He was always pitching into jams and just getting out of them. We had 4 starters and our 2 young guns in Humber and Pelfrey were supposed to battle and take the 5th spot. Bannister was expendable. That said, he's having an awesome year. Best of luck to him but it's easy to say it was a bad deal now. Burgos has an electric arm just needs to fix it mentally, he's only 23 so he still has potential to be a very good RP.

Bannister pitches in front of what .... 19 people in the stands??
Mets got a 23 year old flame thrower who has nasty stuff but was rushed by the horrendous Royals organization(came into the MLB with only 2 innings of AA under his belt).
Burgos has looked good when his slider is on and I think he's a keeper along with Smith and Kunz.

are you of the opinion that we shouldn't have traded heath bell either? because he was doing soooooo well too
Not sure what your talking about. I thought Bannister was very solid for us and then had the never ending (Carlos Boozer like) hamstring injury. I thought it was a bad trade at the time, not just because he's doing well now like Heath Bell, but trusted Omar. On second review Bannister would have been a solid starter for us all year. Burgos better turn out to be better than a poor man's Benitez -- like he appears to be now.
PS.
Looks like Omar got it wrong on Heath Bell too. Ben Johnson sucks! I just can't claim calling that one.

10-7 FOR KC is like winning 20 games for a good team. Burgos blew the game for Humber yesterday. So far Burgos stinks, he just throws hard. A poor man's Benetiez.
No no-no: Ineffective relief pitching isn't restricted to the big league team in the Mets organization as of late. After Philip Humber came within two outs of pitching a no-hitter for Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, the Zephyrs had to survive a 10-inning game to win.
Ambiorix Burgos, who started the season with the Mets, replaced Humber immediately after Triple-A Iowa Cubs pinch-hitter John Nelson singled with one out in the ninth. Burgos then surrendered a run-scoring double, threw a wild pitch and allowed a double and a single that tied the score at 3. The Zephyrs won, 4-3, in the 10th, when Andy Tracy walked with the bases loaded.

The truth is, we had enough depth at the starting spot that Bannister might not have earned the 5th rotation until Pelfrey lost it.
Still, in hindsight, Bannister is outpitching Burgos - only a fool would say otherwise. But, I can't blame Omar for this one. Burgos is the kind of player you can't help but want to acquire. Bannister looked like your average #4 or #5 starter (or worse).
Bottom line - Bannister pitched OK for us last year, 5 starts, 2-0, prior to his injury and he pitched bad after the injury. I don't think anyone expected 10-7, 3.28 era from him this year. Not even Kansas City.
bad trade (so far), but - so what. Get over it. We got Perez and Maine - 2 pretty good starters, for next to nothing.

Bill Clinton slept with an intern. A consenting adult and he got impeached and nearly disbarred as a result. Donald Trump went to parties showcasing underaged women brought in as basically prostitutes, and he says it's nothing.

very true. At the time, no one could have foreseen our lineup problems. dont forget, we lost bradford (our horse) and duaner was confirmed to be out for the rest of the season with his new injury. we needed bullpen help.
burgos hasnt panned out yet, but he is still an asset for the future. bannister was one of the many pitching prospects we had. we had high regard for pelfrey(and still do) and humber, despite them faultering with limited success in the minors and bigs.
at the time, it was the right move. we cant all expect them to go our way.

a poor man's benitez??!??!?
lmao. were any of you watching when benitez pitched for this team or are you going off of what was written about that worthless pile of crap? because if you really had been watching, you'd realize that there is no such thing as a "poor man's benitez." benitez is as low as it gets.

Benitez gave us 2 awsome seasons. There was a time when he was incredible.
and if memory serves, Bradon Looper was as low as it got - not Benitez.

Get off my nut's. Like I said, I liked Bannister's stuff from day 1 (AAA) and didn't like the trade when it happened. I didn't say I predicted anything about Heath Bell. Omar needs to be questioned on not improving our bullpen or at the very least matching the Orioles offer for Chad Bradford.

Well, Bradford isn't quite the pitcher he was last year - hitters are hitting 300 against him, which isn't great. Still, that move was questioned by many fans - letting Bradford go for nothing (we may have gotten a compensatory pick - big deal), and signing Shoensuck for 10 million.
and, to bring another trade in the mix - the Vargas trade now - Vargas has done NOTHING for us. I wonder what he might do next season, but for now - I don't know. (I don't recall who we gave up for Vargas, I'm sure somebody here remembers).
but Omar's still done well overall. He's gotten more hits than misses.
Alou looks like a good pickup - so what if he missed the season if he's healthy come playoffs. He can hit.

bradford is getting LIT UP, "rockersteps." omar was smart not to give a non-closer a freaking 3 year contract. relief pitching is a crapshoot from year to year. he ATTEMPTED to improve the bullpen by signing the show, which hasn't worked out too well. schoenweis has never been great but why don't you tell me what YOU would've done this offseason (other than stupidly giving chad bradford a 3 year contract)?

I would have not given the Show a 3 year contract, but thats about it. Bannister is having a good year, who cares. It's not like he was going to start for us this season. He would have been behind Pelfrey and Humber anyway. He is not better than Maine or Ollie, Glav n El Duque are would be ahead of him, and he most likely would have been lost once Pedro returned. It was a good trade for both teams when it happened, it's not Omar's fault Burgos is hurt and Bannister is pitching good. On the Bell deal, yeah we lost that, but the Bell that is pitching for SD was not the one that had some many chances here. When he was here, all he really did was throw his fastball that was straight as heck.

Funny thing. I remember when fans were mad that Bannister was starting instead of Heilman. How things change.
- and in the end, I have as much faith in Maine, Perez & Pelfrey next season as I do Bannister. I can live with this loss and I still think that Burgos might turn into something. THis isn't like the Kazmir loss - which pissed me off for 2 years.

True, but Kazmir didn't win Rookie of the Year like Bannister will. I hope Burgos doesn't equal Victor Zambrano... fool's gold.
