HOT STOVE! Latest mets rumors...

Post#1 » by krustytheclown » Thu Nov 8, 2007 7:23 pm

First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday. Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents. Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets. Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a
rotation spot.

So what about A-Rod? He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It sounds like the Mets may hear Boras out as a courtesy, and even put in an offer they feel is reasonable. That number might fall far short of what it will take, as did theirs for Daisuke Matsuzaka and Barry Zito a year ago. That said, Mets insiders aren't afraid of the full retail price of Rodriguez.

The top priority remains pitching. Carlos Silva, Tom Glavine, Hiroki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett are on the radar. On the relief side, Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch could again be in the mix. The Nats' are said to have their eye on Carlos Gomez and Mike Pelfrey. Gomez is a hot topic these days - the Twins want him too, and could offer up Matt Garza, Kevin Slowey, or Scott Baker.

sorry for the lack of updates..anyone heres the recent batch:

Omar Minaya is considering many options in his hunt for a #1-2 starter. Ben Sheets and Johan Santana we've already discussed today. Who else is on the radar? Ken Davidoff has the latest.

Many of the trade options you're already familiar with: Joe Blanton, Jon Garland, A.J. Burnett, Dontrelle Willis, Jose Contreras, and even Erik Bedard and Jake Peavy. This group varies in number of years under team control, health, and ability.

Davidoff notes that Omar Minaya had dinner with the Indians' Mark Shapiro Tuesday night. It sounds like the Tribe isn't looking to move pitching, so Cliff Lee may be off the table.

These guys are less than #1-2s, but the Mets have interest in Carlos Silva, Kyle Lohse, and Hiroki Kuroda as fallbacks. Adam Rubin has a Mets insider who says they aren't keen on Livan Hernandez. Steve Popper believes Jason Jennings may be considered, as he was a year ago when the Astros were shopping him.

Interestingly the Mets checked in on Brad Lidge but wouldn't part with Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez for one year of him.

Strangely Davidoff says the Red Sox are in the lead for Kuroda. There's already talk of a six-man rotation; how would the Sox accomodate one more starter? I haven't seen the Yankees connected to Kuroda at all. My guess is that they'll pass on him simply because Kei Igawa and Hideki Irabu didn't work out, rather than judge him on his own merits.

haren is on the market...id really like to acquire him...as long as we can get a frontline starter(haren, sheets, peavy) id be thrilled. realistically i dont think we will get johan because omar will be hesitant to deal the cost for him

I think the only way Santana is pitching for the Mets next year, is if Minaya trades Reyes for him.

id be willing to take haren or blanton with harden

make the deal already omar.

if it costs us milledge, humber/pelfrey and heilman and maybe a little more id pull the trigger...

200innings + a potential ace?

I'll put it this way for mets fans..

glavines 200innings < blantons 200 innings

ID LOVE Haren, but we don't have a choice here it seems. If Harden continues to have problems, we could always move him to the pen, which obviously would need help. His stuff int he pen would be electric.

If the Mets could get both A-Rod and Willis but had to give up Reyes would you do it as a GM?

Surprisingly, Shpigel believes the one free agent starter the Mets will seriously consider is Livan Hernandez. That is odd because I had read Livan wasn't high on Omar Minaya's list. We've seen the Mets connected to free agents Byung-Hyun Kim, Carlos Silva, Hiroki Kuroda, Kyle Lohse, and Jason Jennings so far this offseason.

As far as some unsung trade opportunities, my Mets guy says Ervin Santana, Chris Capuano, Claudio Vargas, and Noah Lowry are being
considered.

According to Shpigel, the Mets hope to re-sign Ramon Castro as their backup catcher. I don't see that happening, as he'll probably be able to snag a starting job elsewhere. Options the Mets are considering to start at catcher include Yorvit Torrealba, Ramon Hernandez, Ronny Paulino, Gerald Laird, and Paul Lo Duca. A source tells me the D'Backs' Miguel Montero may also be on the radar.

Shpigel says Luis Castillo might command a four-year deal. Say what? The Mets may yet re-sign Castillo but want to see what the trade market offers first. Shpigel names Orlando Hudson, while I've also heard Alberto Callaspo.

Id actually like Hernandez, he always was good defensively and has a solid bat. Who cares about Bradford, at this point there is no need for him.
