We are going to have to 'overpay' for pitching, at some point. Just like almost every other team in the league. We didn't 'overpay' for pitching last offseason, and if we don't do it this offseason, we're going to fall short again. It's become a necessary evil in this game...

The Mets really need to throw anything and everything they have to get him outside of David Wright and Carlos Beltran.
I would even dangle Reyes for Santana- he is the game's best pitcher and I believe he is worth everything.

He would be a perfect fit for the Mets. Do you guys remember how he has pitched at Shea and against NL competition in recent years?!? All ths talk about decline and all that is just Yankees fans trying to lower the price and get him for crap like Kennedy and Melky. The bottom line is, pound for pound Santana is one of the best three pitchers in the game. I actually wouldn't take many over him if I had to win a big game. Maybe Beckett. And just imagine how much the change to the NL would help him...
It is a no brainer for the Mets, you would all of a sudden own by far the best pitcher in the NL. BY FAR!

I could live with 6 years, 126 million. But I can't live with 6 years 126 million, and Jose Reyes, Martinez and Heilman. Seems too much to give up.
Remember all those aces we've acquired over the years. Brett Saberhagen. Frank Viola. We tried to land that guy from oakland last year - (name escapes me) and he had a bad year with the giants.
Yes, teams do need to overpay for pitchers. The mets made 2 fair bids for ace pitchers last year, neither worked out.
I'd rather just look for a guy who wouldn't cost our best prospects, or make a generous offer to the best free agent on the market.

Apparently the Yankees have asked for Melky, Phil Hughes, and Austin Jackson.
I think we should offer some of our prospects as well, I am pretty sure we can part with either Fernando Martinez or Carlos Gomez, we can also throw in Pelfrey imo.
Damn, I really hope the Mets get Santana.

I could live with Martinez and Pelfrey for Santana too, but I don't think it gets the deal done. In fact, I don't even thing a package that small gets past the hangup.
Martinez, Pelf, Heilman (and . . . Humber?). Maybe. I mean, if we could get him for less than that, great, but I dunno if it's possible.

Forget Santana, go for the younger Dan Haren who's under contract for 3 more years.

I could live with either Santana or Haren. But Haren is more realistic, and much more cost-effective (since that's how Omar seems to be operating these days - 'cept Santana is a Latino, so he may go harder for Johan). I hope the Twinkies stick to their guns and demand the farm from the Yanks though.

The funny thing is that the minute Santana is traded/comes off the market - Beane will jack up the price for Haren/Blanton. Trust me. Starting pitcher will be a moving target for us all winter.

This could be true, but theres no way to believe that Beane could also be asking for prospects right now as if Haren/Blanton were Santana. I think if Omar could get Haren for Milledge + heilman + more he already would have pulled the trigger. My fear is that Beane is asking for Milledge Pelf/Humber Heilman and a B level prospect for Haren. If the Santana trade goes down and its not to the Mets, then all Beane does is ask for more given how desperate we are for pitching.

I wholeheartedly agree. We need to a make a move for a big name ASAP.

Honestly I dont mind if we come away with Blanton/Haren and Willis at all. If anything thanks to Santana that should drive down the market for these guys, Santana trade talks could go on for a long time. Id love to steal one of these pitchers. Heck why stop there, go after Oswalt again. Heck go after Harden as well.
Just get us some pitching that can help, even if they are labeled injury prone. Mark Prior sure... Just dont let us go back with the rotation set in place like it is now.

Twins May Try To Get Reyes From Mets?

New York Daily News - Speculation in MLB circles swirled Wednesday that the Mets, who desperately need to obtain a frontline starter this winter, were considering parting with Jose Reyes to obtain Johan Santana in the wake of a separate pending Twins deal yesterday that would send Minnesota's shortstop, Jason Bartlett, to Tampa Bay along with pitcher Matt Garza and reliever Juan Rincon for outfielder Delmon Young, infielder Brendan Harris and outfield prospect Jason Pridie.
Still, Mets insiders were adamant early in the day that neither Reyes, David Wright nor Carlos Beltran (who has a full no-trade clause) would be traded this winter.
