NEW YORK -- The chase for Johan Santana may remain stalled, but the chase for starting pitching assuredly isn't. According to a report Friday in the Rocky Mountain News, the Mets are "close" to a deal for free-agent starter Livan Hernandez, who could provide a boost for their rotation.
Hernandez, 32, finished 11-11 for the Diamondbacks last season, posting a 4.93 ERA. While he's the half-brother of current Mets starter Orlando Hernandez, he shares none of El Duque's durability issues. And that's precisely where his value lies
Solid signing 5th. He's a innings eater which was something this team really lacked last year. And this would also make Pelfrey be added in the potential Santana deal.

Interesting point about Pelfrey being included in a Santana swap. I hadn't thought about that and it makes sense.
I figured the Mets were going to sign one of the available free agent pitchers. Was just a matter of time.
ofcourse if Pelf is traded for Santana and we sign Livan that crowds our rotation a little.
Santana
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Duque
Livan
one of those guys (probably Livan) goes to the minors. I wonder how Livan would feel about that.
and while I don't want to trade 25 prospects for Santana, a rotation of Santana, Pedro, Maine, Perez & Duque does make my mouth water.

LOVE IT
Puts more pressure on twins, with every passing day it looks like the mets are the only real bidders for santana, everyone else is playing along to make sure the other rival doesnt get him.
TAKE our offer, or draft picks, minny.

I like the fact that Hernandez eats innings like no other picture, however does he still have it in him? Then again I guess that question gets asked about both of them every year, the Hernandez family is something else. Either way he still has talent, he is a good fall back guy and a great back of the rotation pitcher. Plus he is experienced, makes to much sense.

Livan won't go in the minors, there's talk about moving El Duque to the BP to keep him healthy. So if God is a Met fan this can be the Mets potential pitching:
Johan Santana
Pedro Martinez
John Maine
Oliver Perez
Livan Hernandez
Billy Wagner
Aaron Heilman
Duaner Sanchez
Scott Schoenweiss
Pedro Feliciano
El Duque
Matt Wise/Steven Register/Joe Smith

and we would have to be the favorite to win the NL east with that pitching. no one else's bullpen comes close.

I would be 10000% behind putting el duque into the pen, but only if we can land Santana.
One of the biggest problems we had last year is the long man out of the pen. With El duques experience and pitch selection, he could be an EXCELLENT guy to use when we need 2-3 innings. But to put him in the pen and replace him with Livan without Santana? I think that hurts our starting pitching wayyy too much.

also el duque would be a great spot starter, more along the lines of darren oliver from a few years ago.. waaaay better option than dave williams or chan ho park, or whichever washed up japanese pitcher we used this past season... plus pedro probly wont stay healthy all year, we need a better option in case he goes down

Last time I checked which was earlier in the month, Sanchez is throwing 93-94 mph.

Everything I've read says Sanchez is expected back. Only real question is whether he's lost anything after the injury / long recovery, etc.
On Duque to the pen, he's done it before but he's never been very good at it. I have mixed feelings, but if he can improve our pen - more power to him. why not.

Not really, Angelos is mad at Omar because he thinks that he stole John Maine from them.
So he wants nothing to do with the Mets unless they give them everything the Mets have. Also, there was rumors that Angelos rejected a trade that would've sent Bedard and Roberts to the Cubs. The man is a fool.

Bedard would/should cost us more prospects than it would for Santana.
Hes cheaper, and is locked up to us for his arbitration years, unlike Santana.
Plus, Orioles are hesitant to deal with us because we took Maine from them.

Bedard also only had one great year, Im a bit worried about that. However you dont forget how to throw strikes. Either way I still want Santana over him.
