Mets Put Winning Ahead Of Setting Budget
3rd December, 2008 - 11:47 am
Bergen Record - Mets' owner Jeff Wilpon was insistent that putting a winning team in the new stadium was the priority over any budget.
"We don't have a set number that Omar (Minaya) is working off," he said. "We're going to do what we need to do to put the right team on the field so that the fans that come here will be happy with the product," he said. [READ]
http://baseball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... ng_budget/This kind of scares me and excites me at the same time. This probably means that we are going to go after a top notch free agent whether that be K-Rod or CC or what have you. However before you know it we could be looking to like the Yankee team that paid to win instead of developing the farm system which was ultra important.

while i most certainly agree with you..it may be good for the younger guys in a way..they wont feel the pressure to come up here and help this team win if theyre called up. and they can develop that way but eh, thats just me

Omar's been pretty careful before trading away any prospects. Signing free agents doesn't affect the farm system, making trades does.
and while the mets may go over budget, I don't think they will go crazy.

Before omar got here, this team traded away all kinds of stuff. The Kazmir trade was the worst offense.
We traded an OF prospect for Kenny Rogers (don't recall his name), and Kenny wasn't as bad as everyone says he was, but he did lose that game for us as a spot reliever.
Omar made a couple mistakes when he coveted the wrong guy. Bannister for Burgos (Bannister's awful now, but that was still a bad trade), and a couple of good bullpen arms for Jason Vargas, who's now a "toss in" - one of 3 minor leaguers in the Putz trade.
But Omar's mistakes have been coveting the wrong young guys, he hasn't made mistakes inthe direction of throwing young tallent for old. He's made the mistake of young talent for young and guessing wrong.
Last year - Ayala - acquired for practically nothing.
Santana - acquired on the cheap.
Putz - acquired for 2 OK bullpen arms (Smith & Heilman) and 5 throw away players.
Omar's refused to trade Pelfrey or F-Mart last year. He's refused to trade Niess this year. He's darn stingy when it comes to our top prospects. I think that comes from his Expo days when Prospects was all the Expos had.
Forget the Santana trade we gave up a good pitching prospect and a good OF prospect (Car-Go), but we had to get him. Outside of that the best prospect Omar's traded was Milledge, and I don't think he liked Milledge's personality. He got 2 starters for Milledge. That was a forgivable trade.
So - point is - don't worry.
Omar isn't Cashman, he's not going to trade the future for the present. He's going to be patient and value our assets, because that's what he's always done.

this may be inappropriate, but is burgos going to prison, and is there any possibility he ever plays again, because it isn't often you find pitchers who throw as hard as him.
