K-Rod to Mets DONE!

Francisco Rodriguez walked through the lobby at the Bellagio hotel after meeting with the New York Mets on Monday and didn’t give the impression that he’d been bowled over by an offer.

Asked by reporters if he was meeting with anyone else, he responded as he kept walking, “I’m open to anything.”

It was the sound of a market softening.

The Mets’ offer, according to sources, was for two years and $25 million, with an option for a third year. With every step through the opulent lobby, it seemed as if K-Rod was coming to grips with the fact that he is unlikely to get the five-year, $75 million contract he envisioned after setting the single-season saves record of 62 with the Angels last season.

There are several less expensive closers without jobs and there is a prevailing opinion among team executives that grooming a ninth-inning reliever from within is an appealing alternative to doling out a multi-year contract worth more than $10 million a year.

The Mets desperately need a closer with Billy Wagner out for the 2009 season with an injury and the painful memory of blowing game after game in the late innings last season. But rather than overpay in a soft market, it appears GM Omar Minaya is using the glut of free-agent closers to his advantage and keeping his options open.

Really low-ball offer. But we're in a position of strength here. No one else can offer him the money and years we can. But we shouldn't tick him off to the point where he won't want to come here.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are on the brink of landing Francisco Rodriguez. His agent Paul Kinzer is more optimistic than ever. A deal could be done before the end of the Meetings.

regardless on how you guys feel about this(i know bno isnt too big of a fan if i recall) i think the mets played this well and got their guy. i think next u pwe should lock in garland for 2-3 years and look into a back end starter ala andy sonastine or edwin jackson.

Here's an update.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3756383

The New York Mets are reportedly closing in on a three-year deal for free-agent reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

Sports Illustrated, the New York Post and Newsday reported that the team has offered K-Rod a three-year deal. It is a one-year increase over the two years and $24 million the team is said to have initially offered Rodriguez, who broke the major league single-season saves record last season with 62.

Sports Illustrated and Newsday reported that the deal is worth about $37 million. "It's going to get done,'' a person familiar with the talks said, according to SI.com.

Rodriguez's agent, Paul Kinzer, said, "I am more optimistic than I have ever been" about finalizing a deal between K-Rod and the Mets, according to the Post. "We will know more in the next 24 hours, but so far everything has been positive."

FoxSports.com previously had reported that the Mets had offered Rodriguez a third year.

The Mets, whose bullpen was a major culprit in the team's September collapse, are in need of a front-line closer to replace the injured Billy Wagner, who likely will miss all of 2009 following elbow surgery.

The contract would pay Rodriguez about $3 million more than he was offered by the Los Angeles Angels in spring training and $6 million less than Wagner's deal with the Mets, according to SI.com.

$37 million in 3 years, which means it's roughly 12 million dollars per season. The initial term was $25 million in 2 years, so with the new term, we just added an additional year. I think that's a fantastic deal. We're not low-balling or overpaying.

Not the guy I wanted, but I knew this is the guy we would end with. I would have much rather had Fuentes or even a Kerry Wood/Hoffman combination. I just hope we didnt spend everything we were willing to this offseason by signing this guy for 13 million per. We need to still get a big time number 2(Ben sheets please)...and a bat....if we dont make moves, the Braves are going to climb ahead of us in the NL East...especially since it looks like Burnett is going there.......ahhh

Call me odd than, but I wanted K-Rod over any closer that was out there this year. I dont care for Fuentes, I love Street but he is always hurt. Wood is a curveball, but I much rather him or Hoffman for an eight inning role instead of closing. Everyone was turned off by K-Rod because they heard the 15 million a year price tag with him, well with this deal you cant complain.

The Mets are still working with the Rockies on a deal that could bring Huston Street to Queens, according to people connected to the team, as Omar Minaya works to find a set-up man for Francisco Rodriguez.

Fuentes would be okay with setting up? I would think our resources would be better spent on other areas now. Like another starter. Then a corner outfielder, who's hopefully clutch. Maybe a second baseman. But that's a lot of money to commit to a set-up man (9MM per). Cordero, Beimel, and the like, would be more cost effective.

Good news for NY. One team getting a great starter and the other getting a great closer.
