the bullpen as of right now

Post#1 » by blueNorange » Sat Dec 13, 2008 5:17 am

closer - francisco rodriguez
setup - j.j. putz
7th - __________

middle reliever - dirty sanchez

roogy - sean green
loogy - pedro feliciano

mopup - bobby parnell

-------------------------------

who becomes the 7th inning guy?? please don't mention stokes because he sucks. mets need to get a guy who can get both lefties and righties out. now, the dodger non tendered takashi saito so do you sign him if you're omar even though saito's elbow is hanging by a thread and can pop after a one pitch??

me personally i'd package niese and 2 more prospects to the pirates for matt capps but we don't live in fantasty land.

do you take a chance on scott proctor who also got non tendered even though joe torre basically ruined him by using him every other game??

do you sign juan cruz and give up a draft pick for a guy who's inconsistent despite having nasty stuff??

omar has 3 things to address ... a #3 starter(please let it be lowe), a new 2b, and another reliever who doesn't suck.

I like the Nelson idea.

On Stokes, I disagree with you. Stokes pitched well enough for us last year that I think he's earned the long relief spot. Parnell maybe gets Show's spot or maybe the mets sign someone else.

and on trading Niese for a setup man? Hell to the NO. Niese is our next Pelfrey. He's the guy in line for a starting pitcher role. He could be our #3 starter in 2 years.

what about the young guys we thought were going to be our future closers? I believe they were the first and second round picks the past two years. Shouldn't all of the college relievers we have drafted in the past 2 years be ready for the bigs soon?

Stokes had a great run last year, but at the very end of the season he didn't look like the same guy he did earlier. I wouldn't count on him to be as successful CONSISTENTLY this season. He'll do well in stretches.

Isn't Chad Cordero a realistic option? He had some injury problems last year, if he's healthy he's dangerous.. And we know Omar has been coveting him for years now

Kunz was a high draft pick but I'm not sure he's future closer material. Time will tell. Kunz is the youngest of the bunch. He turns 23 in April 2009.

Bobby Parnell is a hard thrower who's probably more likely to be on the 25 man roster on opening day than Kunz. Bobby will compete for the open pen spot and perhaps for the long pen spot against Figgy & Stokes. He needs to earn it because he's an easy guy to send to AAA and call him up when they need him. He's got 5 career innings in MLB and he's still young.

Muniz might never be anything more than a roogy but he could make the opening day roster with a stellar spring training. He's the oldest of the bunch with the lowest upside.

any other "future closers" aren't currently on the 40 man roster.

Mets also have 2 rule 5 guys they will look at. Darren O'Day and Rocky Cherry.

So there's a fair bit of AAA options to be called up, but I don't think any of these guys are sure things for 2009. Mets will probably sign another bullpen guy, but what they spend is another question. They might not go for a higher end 7th inning guy like Nelson or Joe Beimel was a name I heard on another board. They might try to get someone for less than a million.

The guy we got for Schoenweis, Conner Robertson is also in the minor league mix, and I think, unlikely to make the 25 man roster.

I would be fine in carrying both Kunz and Parnell as the back end of the rotation type guys. However there are still a bunch of free agents that are out there that can probably be had for cheap. I would like to have another lefty back there, Feliciano as of now is the only one. Will Ohman would be a guy id love to steal from the Braves.

The Mets are the front-runners to sign Japanese free-agent reliever Ken Takahashi, according to NPB Tracker, the premiere resource for Japanese free agents.

According to the report, Takahashi hopes to sign with a new team by the end of the year.

The 39-year old Takahashi was 8-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 21 games last season for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.

Is Takahashi a starter or a bullpen guy? 8-5, 21 games is a starter's record. If he competes for the 5th spot in the rotation on a cheap salary, then SURE. As a bullpen guy, I think we could do better.

OK, did a little google research on this guy. He was a starter last year but he's been a reliver in Japan too. Projected to be a reliever in the states as well as a minor league contract guy.

I like the idea of a flexible pitcher who can spot start and come out of the pen, but I have a hard time seeing this guy as making a big contribution to the team.

Some clips of him:

He looks like a control pitcher, but he is a lefty so Id take a chance for him assuming its a reasonable contract. Aside from those two clips, cant really comment on him.
