http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/r ... _clos.htmlAccording to a baseball source, The New York Mets appear to be closing in on a deal for free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe.
The deal is believed to be four years in length, or three years with a vesting option. The contract is estimated to be worth between $14-16 million per season. Lowe just finished up a four year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers.
In 2008, Lowe was the Dodgers most consistent pitcher down the stretch and finished with a 3.24 ERA to go along with a 14-11 record with 211 innings pitched.
$14-16 million per season? I think that's overpay. What do you guys think?

a pitcher who puts up an era in the 3's, pitches over 200+ innings, is very consistent, and is a winning pitcher.
no, it's not overpaying ... if a bum like burnett can get 16.5 mill, then what lowe is getting very good value.

I agree if I was a Mets fan I would be very happy for him to be a number 2 behind Santana

Yeah unfortunately Burnett set the bar pretty high for Lowe. It also dont hurt that he has Boras on his side as well...

true but in this case lowe is worth that type of money since he's been a very good starter in his career. perfect #2 behind santana and if pelfrey builds off a good 2008 season, then the mets are set and need to focus on improving their offense.
but getting lowe means the murphy to 2b plan is gone because between santana, lowe, and pelfrey that's gonna be a lot of groundballs.

Thats very true, I do believe their content with the Tatis-Murphy platoon in the outfield. However we all know that Castillo is still with the team and is begging essentially for another chance I wonder what the price on Orlando Hudson is right now. He is a slick fielding second basemen, perfect for turning two.

i'm not a fan of hudson, he's been on the decline recently. but if he's willing to sign for little then i'd be all for it.

It'll be interesting to see what the mets do. I think they are only about 5 million shy of last year and they may be reluctant to go too far over that.
my guess is they have about 10-12 million to spend, and they'd like to upgrade the OF, 2B and Catcher and sign a possible 5th starter. I like the moves they've done so far, but it'll be interesting to watch what they do from here.

Mets hoping to get Lowe for three years
Now that Mark Teixeira has agreed to terms with the New York Yankees, the New York Mets intend to see whether they can slide Derek Lowe right behind Johan Santana in their rotation, according to the New York Times.
The Mets have had Lowe and Oliver Pérez, also represented by Scott Boras, atop their off-season wish list for starting pitching. They had feared Lowe would price himself out of their range, but the Yankees' withdrawal and the softening market have made him much more of a possibility. Lowe, who reportedly had been seeking $18 million annually and a five-year deal, may settle for three years with a vesting option. That is a much more palatable contract for the Mets.
At 35, Lowe, a right-hander, is eight years older than Pérez, a left-hander. But he has proved durable throughout his 12-year career and has been more consistent than Pérez.

Shewed negotiating.
Or, maybe, it's an offer that negotiates him over to philadelphia. That offer makes me nervous. Lowe's worth more than that. He's twice the pitcher Ollie is.
At least, offer him 3 years 41 or something like that. 3 years 36 seems a little insulting for a pitcher of Lowe's consistancy.

I dont see the Phillies adding Lowe, though he would be a good addition to the team.
Lowe Playing The 'I'm Better Than Carlos Silva' Card With Mets
2nd January, 2009 - 5:14 pm
New York Post - The Derek Lowe camp finds it distasteful that the Mets are offering not just the same annual value ($12 million a year) that Carlos Silva received last year from the Mariners, but a year less than Silva received in his four-year, $48 million deal [READ]

I hope we go and get Sheets....yea he has injury issues but the kid is flat out nasty....a Sheets and Santana combo in August, September, October is just nasty.
