According to a baseball source, The New York Mets appear to be closing in on a deal for free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe.

The deal is believed to be four years in length, or three years with a vesting option. The contract is estimated to be worth between $14-16 million per season. Lowe just finished up a four year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers.

In 2008, Lowe was the Dodgers most consistent pitcher down the stretch and finished with a 3.24 ERA to go along with a 14-11 record with 211 innings pitched.

Yeah unfortunately Burnett set the bar pretty high for Lowe. It also dont hurt that he has Boras on his side as well...

true but in this case lowe is worth that type of money since he's been a very good starter in his career. perfect #2 behind santana and if pelfrey builds off a good 2008 season, then the mets are set and need to focus on improving their offense.

but getting lowe means the murphy to 2b plan is gone because between santana, lowe, and pelfrey that's gonna be a lot of groundballs.

Mets hoping to get Lowe for three years

Now that Mark Teixeira has agreed to terms with the New York Yankees, the New York Mets intend to see whether they can slide Derek Lowe right behind Johan Santana in their rotation, according to the New York Times.

The Mets have had Lowe and Oliver Pérez, also represented by Scott Boras, atop their off-season wish list for starting pitching. They had feared Lowe would price himself out of their range, but the Yankees' withdrawal and the softening market have made him much more of a possibility. Lowe, who reportedly had been seeking $18 million annually and a five-year deal, may settle for three years with a vesting option. That is a much more palatable contract for the Mets.

At 35, Lowe, a right-hander, is eight years older than Pérez, a left-hander. But he has proved durable throughout his 12-year career and has been more consistent than Pérez.

Or, maybe, it's an offer that negotiates him over to philadelphia. That offer makes me nervous. Lowe's worth more than that. He's twice the pitcher Ollie is.

At least, offer him 3 years 41 or something like that. 3 years 36 seems a little insulting for a pitcher of Lowe's consistancy.
