Former Mets exec Bernazard tore his shirt off like Pedro Morales and challenged the Mets AA ball club to a fight. If it is indeed true Tony Bernazard exerted his opinion in the firing of Willie Randolph, then there is a degree of karma involved with the current debacle.
What I can't understand is why Los Mets GM Omar Minaya thought it would be prudent to go after a NY Post sports writer Adam Rubin? Let's not confuse this situation with the arrest of Cambridge professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Bernazard was an idiot but Omar sounded even more of a douche bag, fueling the fire.
Ever since beloved New Yorker Willie Randolph was shamefully dismissed from Los Mets, Omar Minaya has had a red X on his head. After all, he was the one who put together "Los Mets" from hiring his buddies within the front office to infusing his team with a lot of players from the D.R. and the Latin Americans. Can you blame him? I always say a GM should stick with what he knows. Omar clearly knows how to scout in all over the Americas.
That said, this is the kind of move that puts all the eggs in one basket. From the moment, Carlos Beltran watched that 12-6 sinker drop for a third strike from Adam Wainwright and Los Mets were knocked out in the 2005 NL playoffs...the pressure was raised. It was raised another level when Los Mets missed the Wild Card the next few years.
After a manager change, Omar has very little validation. However, he signed an extension and the Wilpons have lost 700 million. Too much to warrant firing Minaya.
So where is this headed? No where.
Los Mets has no place to go. They don't have prospects ready to be brought up yet. They don't have the coin to over pay for a FA. They have too many players milking their injuries.
Some where Willie Randolph is fighting a slight smirk.
