Joe might be coming back?

There are signs that Torre will be brought back since some members of George Steinbrenner's Inner Circle want to invite Torre to the organizational meetings. If he was a lock to be fired, that wouldn't be discussed.

According to a person in the know, Steinbrenner was affected by Mariano Rivera going to Brian Cashman Wednesday and backing Torre and he is aware of how Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez feel about Torre.

The popular belief inside the Yankees' offices is that Steinbrenner made it difficult to fire Torre when he popped off last Saturday with the Yankees down 2-0 to the Indians in the ALDS. Had The Boss kept quiet, the Yankees could have conducted their business without having to hear the players' love for Torre.

Phil Hughes, the Yanks' talented 21-year-old starter, said Torre was "nothing but great to me. All the players respect him a great deal. ... I love Joe to death."

Torre is tight with longtime Yankee stars such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, and he seemed to forge a bond with rookies, too. When the Yanks clinched a playoff spot in September, a group of young players - Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and others - circled around Torre during the clubhouse celebration, pouring champagne over his head and chanting "Energy!" - a Torre catch phrase for the younger players.

Hughes, like many Yankees, wants Torre to return.

It seems like things are going in Joe's favor somewhat. Although I seriously doubt George signs Joe to a huge contract like his previous one. It will definitely be an interesting few weeks.

I don't see how Joe doesn't come back. There is no better option out there and you have every player with an option talking about not coming back without Joe. This would be a horrible winter if Mo, Posada, Arod, Pettitte, Molina, etc all leave because Joe isn't here. I don't think this team is ready for a Mattingly or Girardi for manager.

Although I wouldn't mind promoting Dave Eisland(sp?) full time in the majors over Guidry because Guidry can't seem to get through to the younger guys. Remember Hughes was struggling until they brought in Eisland to help him in September, which was when he started getting things together. If Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy are to be a major part of our rotation next year then we should put them in the best position to succeed. At this point there is nothing that a pitching coach can really do for Pettitte and Moose. -Jitpal

What about Guidry's approach doesn't connect with the younger guys beyond that one blip? I didn't see much of a gap with the young pitching staff, especially after this year with Joba, Hughes, Kennedy (and to a lesser extent Ohlendorf and Veras) doing so well. I would chalk up Hughes' troubles to age, injuries, and frustration - I'm not really sure what Eisland's role in the organization is, but maybe he had a history with Hughes and that's why he was brought in?

Torre needs to be brought back on a 2 year deal, give Donnie Baseball another 2 seasons to learn the ropes of managing.

Bring Joe Back on a one year deal. He's the best option for this club at this point in time and he deserves to be here for the last game of the Old Yankee Stadium.

You know, when you mention the stadium closing (which I forgot) I think Torre has to stay. The closing of that "era", Do you really want somebody else there for one year?

Could be a special year with the young guns coming up and the stadium closing.

It is great to see players having an affect on managements decision making.

I love Joe Torre and think holding him responsible for a team failing to advance in the playoffs while ignoring the fact that he has gotten them to the playoffs for 12 straight years is so stupid that it can't be put into words. No other team has consecutive trips to the post season going right now, he has 12.

That said I can see a senario were you don't bring Joe back. Now that the emotion has been taken out of it the team has to set a course. Does it make a sense to invest in a bunch of guys on the wrong side of 35 (Posada perhaps the exception here) to try and win one more for George? If not then a guy like Giradi, a manager that is willing to live and die with the young guys would be the answer. Not that I expect the Yanks to slash payroll as much as just invest in young pitiching and position guys.

What this team can't do is let Torre go and then overspend to keep his guys here and then put that on Don Mattingly. It is doomed to fail and frankly I will lose all faith in Cashman, he has to know that anything less than a World Series will be failure and that is a ridiculous senario.

A manager can't win you a World Series but he can certainly **** it up. Joe doesn't pitch and he didn't turn this team into the 1997 Baltimore Orioles and firing Davey Johnson didn't win them any games, actually have never won since.
